Heartwarming memories of a never-to-be-repeated time

This is a remarkable film. It is a revealing insight into a time which
is embedded into the cultural psyche of any football fan or indeed, any
sports fan. Of course, if one is a Man Utd fan (like myself) it is an
absolute treat!

I defy any Utd fan not to get a lump in their throat as they relive
Beckham's wonder goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon, or
Giggs' gravity-defying dribble and match-winner against Arsenal in the
the semi-final replay of '99, or Ole Gunnar Solskjær's toe-poked winner
against Bayern Munich in the epic Champions League final of '99.

It's not just a catalogue of footballing highlights however. It gives a
real insight into the mindset and environment these working-class,
soon-to-be superstars were nurtured in.

I know all film-making is manipulation, clever editing and good
story-telling, but it is difficult to believe that the relaxed, raw and
even hilarious anecdotal banter between the now legendary players, is
anything other than genuine, transparent, respect and admiration for
each other.

The blend of talent, ability, dedication, character, camaraderie and
ultimate history-making achievement between these young footballers is
like a far-fetched story from a kids' football magazine. Yet it is all
true.

I firmly believe that the current infrastructure of football doesn't
permit this kind of situation from ever occurring again. We live in a
different world now.

As a side-note, the current under-performing Man Utd team (and manager)
should watch this together to remember the amazing legacy they are
trying to preserve.

I totally agree... and with the lump.. oh yeah.. all those moments brought tears of longing for a period that marked some of my most joyful memories. And when Beckham mentioned he was used to seeing Gary at his back, Scholes, Butt and Giggs on his side and a bit further in the back, he could see Phil.. yeah.. we were there with them.. where they stood.. how they found each other on the pitch, it was magical!

And I agree again.. the current generation need to learn from that squad! Wish Van gaal the best of luck.. he needs time and we need patience!

When I wrote this it was Moyes' team under-performing and now we have these "world-class" superstars letting us down week after week.
I don't believe, in this case, it is about time or patience. Normally I would agree that these commodities are vital for any manager, but I really don't think Van Gaal has the magic any more. Compared to Mourinho (the two were described as the most "charismatic" premiership managers on MOTD!) he looks and sounds like a doddering pensioner. Even his grasp of the English language is not as good as it should be at this level.
If they weren't wearing red shirts I wouldn't recognise this playing style or level of commitment as a Man Utd side.
You can't buy a team, no matter how many top players you panic buy. This film showed the absolute pride these young players had at pulling on the famous shirt of the most famous club in the world. I don't get that feeling from any of the current crop.
I am writing this just after watching another sub-par performance against Chelsea where they were lucky not to concede an obvious penalty and then got more fortune with a ridiculous red-card for Ivanovic just before they equalised in the dying seconds.
I can honestly foresee a few barren, disappointing years.
I hope I am completely wrong...
