Just discovered this movie and from reading the description; is this based on this movie or is it just one that seems alike?

No, Les Choristes and this one are completely different films - Les Choristes was based on an old French film La Cage aux Rossignols both featuring somewhat 'rugged' choirs, while this one is a showcase of American Boys Choir.
