What do you think Jane was like in high school?

I really liked this movie a lot. In fact, I thought the movie was so good, that it left me wanting more.

At one point in the movie, Jane's sister's friend (Cynthia) says that Jane has improved a good deal since high school. Bianca (her sister) agrees. At one point near the end of the movie, Jane says that "a boy wanted to kiss me once" until someone told him about her, at which point he lost interest. I'm assuming that this was probably in high school, because my gut reaction is to picture gossipy teens talking about how strange they think she is. I may be wrong, but I don't think older people would act like that.

For some reason, I've been focused on this question. It's one of the few hints we get about Jane's life outside of the events of the movie. I suppose it's a sign of a good story when one finds themselves thinking of the characters after the story is over. Nonetheless, the movie never elaborates on what her "improvement" consists of.

I'm a "neurotypical" and I hated high school. It was divided into groups. Best looking, popular, brains, clowns, etc.
Then there were the misfits of various kinds. I don't know where I was going with this.
This character had a big sis looking out for her...
Ah, the movie ended rather abruptly just now.
She also mentions making costumes for high school plays.
Maybe we need a prequel.
I agree, I too wanted more.

I'm sorry baby, I had to crash that Honda.

I'm an Aspie girl like Jane, and high school for me was hell.
I imagine that in her experience there was a lot of gossiping, misunderstanding, prejudice and bullying. Maybe she wasn't fully diagnosed then (like I wasn't during high school) or misdiagnosed, and certainly her classmates didn't understand what it means to have Asperger's. Well, even her brother-in-law Rob doesn't understand, because he once calls her "retarded". So in high school probably she would know less mechanisms of coping with her difficulties and was considered as a weirdo.

I'm in my mid fifties and loved the movie and the performances of nearly all the characters. It seems that both my wife and I know people with Asbergers but we couldn't recall a single person with Asbergers from our childhood, teens or twenties, even though the mannerisms and behaviors exhibited by this character and others are familiar from those older time frames. I suppose it simply wasn't talked about or maybe not diagnosed in those days. The Jane character was certainly endearing and lovely, in that awkward way. I rate the movie higher than the current average.
