The whole premise is flawed from the start

I'm trying to figure out how shes doing hard time. Let alone any time. It makes no sense

1. Its likely the dad already has a record

2. He physically assaulted her. Clear evidence on her face. So stupid.

3. He was drunk as hell. The autopsy report will show this.

4. The judge was a women and would therefore likely favor the rape victim. There's absolutely no way in hell a female judge is taken the side of a drunk, who physically assaulted his daughter.

5.In general rape accusations and self defense favor the women. Innocent men are constantly put away cause women falsely accused them of rape wiith little evidence to back it up.

6. The only evidence against is that of her mom which doesn't matter cause it isn't evidence of anything.'

In other words. Stupid movie

Watch and read the news. This does happen. Justice system ain't perfect, yo.

The Judge in a case like this can only sentence, a jury decides the fate and apparently they felt she was lying to cover up a murder.

I thought the film was entertaining way to kill an hour and a half, the lead actress wasn't too bad, but the main flaws has to deal with many of the areas where we see stuff that would most likely never occur, at least not like that.

1. TV being in a cell with someone, this would never happen, besides the fact that they are in jail for a reason, a luxury like that is reserved for the main activity hall. The other reason is a convict could very well break the TV and use the broken glass to kill themselves. Also, there is no plug that I've ever seen in jails I've seen

2. Openly doing drugs, there's a few moments where the characters are seen doing drugs openly, while the shooting up while having a lookout is possible, having a bong with a lighter in a desk drawer would never happen, Jails typically have routine and surprise cell searches, something like that would easily be found, not too mention the smell weed leaves would obviously be smelled.

3. Showers are usually done in groups, there were quite a few scenes where she is showering alone, from what I understand this doesn't happen, they are given a schedule and if they choose to not shower they have to wait for the next day.

I've watched several different documentary shows about jail/prison where an inmate has had a tv in their cell. It was always the extended stay inmates.

The TV and the pipe that was in the drawer are not being hidden from the guards. They were given to them by the guards. She says if the prisoners are nice to them they sometimes return the favor. Translation: They bang the guards and the guards give them stuff.

The times she showered alone was when she was in solitary. Solitary means alone.

Inmates FREQUENTLY have tv's in their cells. This isn't something new or only reserved for certain inmates...any inmate who can afford one can purchase a television set for their cell in most, if not all American prisons.

reply

Texas does not allow it. But other states are not the same.

This is what happens when MRA knuckle-draggers manage to get online, I suppose.

A jury of her PEERS would have decided whether or not she is guilty. Considering how fundamentally stupid many in this country have become, it is entirely plausible that she would have been convicted. Abuse victims are convicted nearly as often as they are not. The one thing that probably would have happened would have been a lengthy appeal process -- but if the girl were lower class and out of the media eye, even that protocol may not be followed properly, depending upon the state.

reply

Yeh, even accounting for a grossly unfair justice system, a girl covered in bruises who kills her drunk father in a way anyone who examines the scene can see is accidental, isn't likely to serve time, let alone that much. There was that case someone in the US where a judge colluded with the owner of a prison to convict kids who shouldn't have seen the inside of a cell, so anything can happen I suppose.

reply

OP is right. There is no way in hell she would have been convicted. I mean even the way the guy died, she kicked him off and he slammed his neck into some glass. it's not even like she had any fingerprints on that glass where it could have been more deliberate. All the other points OP made were spot on. I swear some people in this thread are being contradictory just to be contradictory. Deep down they know there is no way she would have been convicted.

The thing I do not like is that the description here in the IMDB says "a young girl sent to juvenile prison for the murder of her abusive stepfather". I think that is not an accurate description of the movie. Sure, she was convicted, but there is more to the story. Fortunately it is fictional.

Note that during the trial, her own mother insists that the stepfather is a nice guy and would never have abused her. That is also not normal. It could sure influence a judge and jury if it did happen in real life but as you say, many things in the movie are not realistic.
