Starts with a great premise and atmosphere...

And then gets formulaic and in search of and a tidy ending, mostly failing. The autopsy build and atmosphere is quite good, and had me riveted.

Then it just sort of wandered around and went from original to the opposite. It's like they had 2/3rds of a great movie/premise, shot it, and then struggled to bring it to a close. Too bad. I'd give the first 2/3rds a 9 to 10 stars, last 1/3rd like a 5, so ends with a 7 or so.

Why do you think anyone cares about your opinion if you are unable to express it accordingly to initiate a debate?
Just dropping one line of "I liked it kinda" won't lead anywhere, will it?

For example, you claimed it was "mostly failing" (the ending).
Well... why, how so?

You lead with the pejorative premise that you know what I think. And that I'm incapable of expressing my opinion sufficiently to initiate a debate. I also did not state or paraphrase: "I liked it kinda".

But to expand on my admittedly terse initial offering:

I found the "they created a witch" epiphany during the witch hunts of New England to be far-fetched and rather lame. I found the girlfriend wandering into the basement and an axe very lame. I found the "sacrifice" of Jane Doe with the father, before his so offs him, to partially bring her back to be somewhat tepid.

I really liked the systematic autopsy approach with increasingly bizarre results to be very effective and creepy. I just wish they had been able to generate a better (all just my opinion) ending. For example, cultists recover the body and leave a dead coroner and his son, and some really bizarre notes and video footage.

As I expected, you missed something very important about the movie. I'd suggest you'd watch it again, but you probably won't, so: There was no girlfriend in the basement. There was also no dead cat, nor walking dead. There wasn't even a storm at all, which is unveiled by the radio broadcast noting how this is the fourth day in a row with great weather.

The witch was real, but basically nothing that happened was. It were mind-tricks so she gets her way.
There also was no "deal", she simply toyed with her victims, being in total control at every point.

There are quite a few sweet little moments easily missed and so far whenever I saw someone saying this movie was bad or lacking, they missed these things, unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing your more detailed thoughts though.

I got the "mind-screw" elements like the storm being a complete fabrication, etc. But I thought the cops found the girlfriend's dead body so that was real, as well as the father and son. Of course, her body was untouched, which begs the question of whether any of the bizarre autopsy results were real. Recall, the cops DID see the partial notes on the white board, but were those complete garbage, like the shattered ankles and wrists but no external signs? Also, was the camera and recording equipment functional?

I found that half of the movie to be compelling, but per my original comments, found the "witch/mindfuck" resolution to be lame. Just my opinion. I doubt I'd watch it again, too little time...
