It Had Good Atmosphere (Spoilers)

This movie is such an oddity. It got alot right, but really could have used some backstory. Even just one scene with showing some of what happened to her and where she came from. I already figured out the body was a very old one as soon as they said she was covered in peat. I immediately thought of the bog mummies.

So basically, She was from the time of the Salem witch trials. She was an innocent and the ritual that was performed on her actually turned her into a witch/daemon, trapped and preserved in that body for centuries and doomed to feel the pain of the autopsy. The only way to free her is to get a volunteer to accept her full suffering and probably die during it. Then she can resurrect fully. When the son killed his dad, she wasn't finished resurrecting. She killed the son out of frustration and rage at being so close to coming back.

I liked the atmosphere, and the jump scares were okay, but the movie seems to rely on the jumps too much. And ultimately, we got a very long autopsy with a very slow reveal. I just kind of came away from it feeling like not much happened. I didn't hate it, but I feel like alot's missing from the story. I think they needed to make us care about her or the other characters. I didn't feel connected to them. I gave the movie four stars. It's not terrible, but it's not really great either. It's just sort of an odd one off in the genre.

Well said. I feel the same way. It was enjoyable, especially because of the mood and setting, but I think with more thought put into it, it could have had much greater potential.

Also the girlfriend part... I was hoping that she was a manifestation, or something, when she was revealed again. Her role was incredibly vapid.

Yes, the girlfriend suddenly showing up was just a cheap trick. It made no real sense and would have been better if it really was a zombie.

The girlfriend showing up is logical because he told her to come back to get him so they could catch the midnight movie. Her appearance gives the audience an ideal of how much time had passed. It makes us wonder why she came back if there was such an awful storm and it give us a clue as to things being hallucinations because of the way she died.

Carrigon...the girlfriend was never there, it was all an illusion made by the witch, everything that happend was just in their minds, everything was a mind trick, so no walking corpses and no girlfriend who came back and no storm etc etc....try pay attention when you watch a movie and you might understand it and maybe even find the movie better than you think...

You know, I really enjoyed it. I was being a bit dramatic. But you're right, Iits cool because that's what I was hoping for, so it makes me like it more.

I don't believe the girlfriend was in their minds. I do believe she was one of the dead bodies they wheeled out. The corpses might have been though.

It was enjoyable because you couldn't get your eyes off of Jane Doe. Some girls are so hot, they're even good to go after a few hours post mortem. :D

reply

I respectfully disagree.

I felt more uneasy not knowing anything about her. I was put in the perspective of the main characters, like Who and what is she? Even after they explained it, we still have no way of knowing the truth, simply because it was just the dad drawing his own conclusion.

i very much liked this movie. i just today (on a different site) voted it one of the best horror movies of 2016.

Yeah, I think the atmosphere and Brian Cox's performance are really what saved this movie in the end.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here-https://youtu.be/v5RZtsKxjy4

SPOILERS:I agree strongly with your first statement, this movie is an oddity. I liked it much more than you did though. I just watched it on cable and it was an utter surprise to find a great movie I had never even heard of. Brian Cox and Emile Hersch are pretty big name actors so I can't imagine how I missed it at the theater. I loved the story from the beginning but it did get weak at the end. When they found the cloth with the tooth, I was excited because I really thought they might turn it into some kind of saint story, like an incorruptible corpse of a saint. I don't know, I wished they had tried something really different like that. But they went for another Salem witch scenario. Oh well, I still enjoyed it very much and would recommend it, if only for the terrific cast and direction. 8/10
