What bother me most about this movie...

...was that the dad was apparently not yet retired. (Well, besides Heigl and Bledel having ZERO chemistry, their "very much in love" characters almost never touching -or very awkwardly-, and Bledel's character being completely underused and over all useless to the story).

WTAH. That man, clearly well in his sixties, should not still be a working firefighter.

Right? Anyone has an explanation for this? Am I missing something obvious here? Do firefighters not have a mandatory retirement age of 57 in the US?

Other than that, I understand why this movie needed to be made and will comment no further on the levels of mediocrity it reaches.

Perhaps he doesn't go out in the field but is a desk job? Not all firefighters are young though. When I saw the documentary on World Trade Center, there were older firefighters in the building doing delegation and communication at the lobby who appears to be in their 70's! The oldest was the "father" ?? Who was an actual working firefighter who doubled as a priest (who was the first firefighter listed as an casualty and was carried out wrapped in the American flag. He was mid 80's.

As for the actress from Gilmore Girls, I couldn't see her as a sexual being. Lol she still has that wide eyed teenager look about her. I tried ignoring that fact tho.

The Dad and the other guy has what appeared to be soot or smoke on their faces in one of the scenes in the firehouse when the other fire guys were talking about the dead cat. Not sure if that actually meant they were helping fight the fire but sure seemed like it. The lack of chemistry between the actresses wasn't great. They didn't look comfortable with each other at all. I am assuming that is the reason with the lack of scenes of them together. Also the soundtrack and music felt a bit loud and clumsy in places. I usually enjoy these types of movies but this one was just ok.

To be fair, I think there were all of 3 scenes they shared where they were not in Jenny's hometown/neighborhood or around her family. Those scenes were discussing coming out to her family and getting married, after the big blow up with her dad, and dealing with seating arrangements. From what I remember of Jenny crying, she was closed off and not seeking comfort from Kitty, so hard to be touchy-feely. The other two were hardly relaxing situations.

I think after being so used to having to hide the nature of their relationship for 5 years from the world she grew up in, it was difficult for them to get out of that habit. Did they display much chemistry in the movie? Nope, but neither were they the focus of it.

I cannot speak for other regions, but where I live, firefighters are public union employees who retire after 25 years (at most) -- many retire earlier, due to things like back injuries on the job.

Assuming you start even as late as 30 (most start at 22 or so), you'd be only 55. I've never seen an elderly firefighter.

People age differently, and some grizzled looking dude might LOOK 70 but be only 52.

I do think SOME volunteer firemen may be older, but not the rank and file public union types.

Seriously -- would you want your house to be burning down, and a 70 year old firefighter shows up -- with bad knees and hips, and achy back? NOT GONNA HAPPEN. It's a young man's career.

That's why we allow firemen to retire quite early on a public pension. It is a very dangerous, hard job with serious risks of injury and death, and you can't do it properly much past 50.

I"d guess the average age of retirement for firefighters is 48 or thereabouts.

So Tom Wilkinson (who I think is the dad here) is WAY WAYY too old -- like 20 years too old. This is typical of Hollywood fiction. They have no idea about how the real world works. To a Hollywood scriptwriter in LaLaLand, the real world of blue collar jobs is just unimaginable.

I think another big factor is that Katharine Heigl is at least 40-42, and they needed a believable actor to play her dad. You can't have a 48 year old actor playing the dad of a 42 year old woman.

For comparative basis: Tom Cruz and Brad Pitt are the correct age to play RETIRED firefighters....i.e., early 50s.

Heigl was 35 when the film was released. Since it took a long time to finish, I imagine she was younger still during shooting.

this also had Grace Gummer playing the older sister, even tho she is 8 years younger than Catherine Heigl..

The thing that bothered me most ist hat I found Jenny to be a bitch, really. I know we were headed for trouble at the christening scene that she tried to make about her but The funeral scene was completely uncalled for, she embaressed her girlfriend and it practically felt like she used being gay as a weapon more to embarrass her family than anything.
