Berlin

It did bug me a tad that they used Berlin in those final eps. She's around 40. Her prom would have been in say 1994. If she was in her mid 40s, the group would have worked a lot better. By '94, Berlin was long broken up and not even in the public consciousness. Take My Breath Away was in '86 (and Liza would have been around 10 when it came out) and would have been relevant for the rest of the decade. It's not that important, but I do think they could have gotten another band to fit more closely to her high school days. Personally I would have chosen Boyz II Men for them to use. That would have fit perfectly with her high school days. They were on fire in the early to mid 90s. Missed opportunity.

But Berlin was probably easier to get than Boys II Men! LOL

But you are right - the timing for Berlin as a prom theme was off. And I would think that if you were truly whatever age Liza is trying to be - you would only know Berlin from the Top Gun soundtrack and my not really be familiar with their other work.

I've spent too much time thinking about this!

Boyz II Men still perform and I actually think they wouldn't have minded the publicity. Not a huge deal as I said. I am in the age bracket where Berlin would have worked, so it did hit home so to speak.

You're right..prom is a bit off as a personal reference.

That was what threw me off. Grunge had taken full control by the time she graduated. Berlin was like a faded memory.

There's nothing to say the prom DJ couldn't play "Take my breath away" as a slow dance at the prom.

Anyway, was awesome to see Berlin in the show. I used to adore them!

I agree with you, speedy

I am going to be 44 this year, and I think I was 14 when Top Gun/Berlin was popular - I didn't even kiss a boy til I was 16 and that was actually sort of by accident. I didn't actually date or have intimate encounters with the opposite sex until after I moved out of the parental home and was living in dorms while getting my post-h.s. education. So for someone 3 years younger than me (Liza) to imply (even "almost by accident" to Charlies but clear to the viewers) that song had some romantic meaning to her in her real life, seems silly, at best.

I must say the same thought occurred to me. I absolutely love that song, but it definitely hits me more with childhood nostalgia than any romantic link. I'm only 2 years younger than Liza, and at our graduation the romantic song that got everyone up was "I had the time of my life" from Dirty Dancing. Even though that was still a few years before that, it was sort of the dorky soppy song that was played at every event at the time. They really could have come up with something more relevant. The 90's is huge right now (yay!), It would have been easy to find someone else.
