Dont understand the end

Interesting movie yes, but the end...the crying..what for? because the "demon" didnt come to her again?.

People who is confused about if she is the same person 9 years later, she is! when she saw the photo of the girl she killed, she smiled! and went to the bathroom and continue smiling!! i believe that she couldnt believe that that couple were the parents and that amused her.

Yes, she was upset the Demon didn't come back to her. When she was A little girl, she was totally lonely, and it made her A really easy target for possession. The Demon filled her with A sense of fulfilment, which rendered her whole finally. After she got Exerorcised, she went back to being totally lonely. She killed the Mom and Dad as an offering, and when it didn't take her again, she realized she'd always be alone, hence the crying..

From what I see there's two ways this could've ended. The sacrifice she made by killing the parents didn't work and the demon didn't return, or she figured out she was imagining it.

Though I'd go with the first one, since the latter is just a theory.

I think she was just *beep* When Rose finds her in the furnace, she's rocking like a lunatic. Although that wouldn't explain how she knows her parents are dead, unless she killed them... Maybe I missed some clues there when she was talking to the Headmaster? She seemed pretty stuck on him and upset that he wasn't going to make her show. I think it's worth a rewatch just to see if there's any clues I didn't pick up on (the song she sings had some eerie lyrics, I wonder if they Lion and the Lamb stood for anything?).

I really love this movie, but I do find the ending incomprehensible. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just mysterious.

Unlike most, I'm not sure the two girls are the same person. There's something mysterious that connects them, but I don't see why one would use two actresses to play the same young person.

I'll have to watch it again sometime.

They are the same person. The biggest clue is Joan has a scar on her shoulder from where the cop shot her when she was younger. The director Osgood Perkins refers to them as the same girl in the movie commentary.

My guess is the director wanted to throw the audience off by casting two different actresses to play the one girl.

Umm....they are most definitely the same person. That's not even a question. "Joan" had the same memories as Katherine.

She had facial reconstructive surgery in the mental hospital for some reason.

Interesting to see people talking about demonic possession when My take was that Kiernan Shipka's character was actually mentally in and that Emma Robert was her other identity. but I suppose the supernatural angle makes a little more sense.

Except for Rose's parents say Rose was murdered nine years prior which is why they had a different actress. Yes. They are the same person on different time lines.

girls are the same person, 9 years apart.
ambiguous ending is intentional, you can take it as she lost her battle with insanity or she was sad that her demon was gone, either way.
