Scarier and better than It Follows and The Witch

And yet It Follows has a 6.9 and The Witch has a 6.7, while The Blackcoat's Daughter only has a 5.3.

I'm hoping that, once it is officially released, its rating will go up. I wish all possession movies were more like this one and less like Ouija: Origin of Evil (which is overrated at a 6.7). BCD is proof that you don't need CGI demons and excessive jump scares to make a movie scary and unsettling.

Welcome to Fright Night....for real. 

From all the great buzzzzzzz I'm hearing about this film, plus the creepy trailer, I'm wondering WHY this is getting such a low score from users? Critic's reviews ha e it at 80something - granted, there's only four critic reviews - but what gives?
I thought It Follows was ok, The Witch I enjoyed; does that mean I'll loooove this (please say yes, please say yes)? Thanks!

I don't know if I trust this guy lol.
I loved The Witch, I highly doubt this will be better but I'm gonna give it a watch tonight.
I'll give you some feedback.

BeOneOfUs! I had a chance to watch it last night and I had elevated hopes, but The Witch is one of my favorites from 2016 (which we already discussed), so the comparison was a BIG statement... that's all I'll say for now!

Can't wait to read your follow up, then we shall discuss!

It wasn't the best. Not sure what the OP is smoking...lol
The best thing about it for me was the soundtrack.
I didn't love It Follows either but it was certainly better than this.

I did appreciate the atmosphere. There were a couple of unsettling scenes.
But the film didn't really make a whole lot of sense to me and the pacing was awful.
Maybe I'll watch it again someday but I wasn't overly impressed from my first watch.

reply

Yes! I don't have anything else to add, other than to agree with you on all points. The five creepy, brief scenes weren't enough for me to really dig it, and even the psychological aspect of it was a little too thin for me. I've enjoyed trying to piece it together retrospectively, but even that hasn't been much since it was just too sparse storywise, and I'd liked to have seen more backstory to the main characters to get me to love/hate them.

Again, we're on the same wavelength, BeOneOfUs.

Horror movies with abstract plots and slow-pacing get hated on by mainstream audiences.

Fact.

Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.

reply

Oh come on. This isn't a mainstream film, and the typical viewer watching this won't be a fan of mainstream horror, or mainstream films in general. Do you really think the general population will be seeking out this film? No way. And it's not even that "abstract," smartypants.

That said, I'm always on the search for excellent, thought-provoking horror films and would love to hear some suggestions from you, some of your favorites, new or old. Whatcha got for me, oh learned one? ;)

Agree to disagree.
It Follows and The Witch were both better than this movie. It does have the atmosphere though, and that counts for something. Session 9 has it too. The Babadook has it. Both It Follows and The Witch had it. I don't know if I would say Ouija: Origin of Evil had it but it was still a fun movie.

I watched this based on the fact that I like "It Follows" and "The Witch".

The only thing similar was the cinematography. There was NOTHING eerie or creepy.

Boooo!!!

The Witch and It Follows blow this nonsense out of the water. I had to fast forward after watching 50% of the film. Great movie if you're an insomniac, though.

Deserves a 2.0 score and that's being overly generous.

reply

I agree. The Witch and It Follows are mentioned as shining examples of great modern horror for good reasons, the first and primary one is their atmosphere and style SUPPORT what are great stories rather than use those techniques to mask what is essentially a pretty simple and dumb story, like The Blackcoat's Daughter has.

When I was finished watching The Witch and It Follows, and knew that I would watch them again at some point in the future; they were that good. With this film, I felt "eh", big deal, what can I watch next now that's actually good?

reply

Its pretty hard to top the nuns heads in the pillow cases... that was very surreal - basically the epitome of horror IMO. Yet- I still feel The Witch was a more enjoyable watch on the first viewing.

reply

And yet It Follows has a 6.9 and The Witch has a 6.7

Those ratings are way off in the first place so not really a good comparison since they are all being slammed for no reason. User ratings are useless anyway, go for the real reviews instead, it's as simple as that.
But at least it looks like the era of idiots doing whatever they want on the internet is slowly coming to an end.
