Where can a body go to discuss NZ TV?

Anyplace but this place is fine. Thanks!

I know what you mean. Same with the Australian shows I have been watching. I google the episodes to discuss and they got nothing online. I guess they just do not have a big enough fan base to generate discussions. The FB pages, are dead and the stars do not even reply.

reply

Aaaagh, sorry this is late. Missed the reply. It's so sad, feels like there must be someplace out there we can talk about Antipodean TV. I see small threads on existing forums but those are so spread out and much more general. Ahh well, perhaps one day I'll make one. Any news on a second series of Step Dave?

Yeah, they announced season 2 back in July. I'd guess they're getting ready to start filming, judging by comments on Twitter

reply

The got a 2nd season! It was posted on their Facebook page a few weeks ago. I really like this little show and I wish it would get imported to the US. I think it would do well here. I am not sure why the American market does not buy programs from around the world. Our programs are everywhere. Maybe the countries do not allow them to be sold? I know many countries actually have government funded TV. Which is so weird to me.

reply

The US doesn't buy programs from around the world because network executives think American viewers aren't interested in anything that doesn't fit the mold of US tv shows. Believe me, New Zealand would *love* to sell content to the US. When The Almighty Johnsons became the first NZ tv show to be shown in the US, it was a major point of pride.

And tv and film-making in NZ is largely funded by the government, including Step Dave.

reply

Well all I can say is thank heavens for the Internet. I watch shows from around the world and love it! I just finished Äkta människo/Real Humans from Sweden, awesome sci fi show. I love Upper Middle Bogan, and Offspring, (canceled now),and other Aussie shows
I try to watch shows from NZ, but there are not too many that seem to make it past one season ,and then they are hard to find online. I watch Masterchef from all over the world. And as Amazing Race is expanding, I will watch it from whatever country plays it. Saving Hope and Continuum and Motive and Remedy from Canada, and of course tons of British programs. Dr Who, Downton etc.
Network executives are losing their viewers and I am a perfect example of why and how it happening. Add in Netflix, ( change your IP and login in to Netflix around the world) and Amazon Prime and Hulu and they better get a more broad offering of shows.

reply

Thanks for the updates, guys!! Cannot wait for the second series (and a little shocked that it is getting one).

It really is a shame that none of the US Network suits are willing to take more chances on TV from other English speaking countries. A case in *cough cough* point, the utterly pointless remake of Broadchurch. No need for that at all. I get that sometimes, cuts for language and content would be too drastic but a lot of things could be shown as is and they are just too afraid to take a chance.

Part of it, I feel, is the general tone of the shows. Look at Outrageous Fortune. The original, no judgement of the Wests, we took them as they were and fell in love. Moved to the UK and it becomes "Honest". Fair play, that's the jumping off point. She's trying to make honest citizens out of the family. Now the US version that made it to air "Scoundrels". A true enough description, I suppose but still very judgy. Plus, making the episode titles lines from nursery rhymes annoyed the *beep* out of me.

And yes, jk. Thank the gods for the internet!! The tale of me first trying to watch Outrageous Fortune is a long and convoluted one. Fortunately, it's a lot better now but it's still not great unless you have a super ratio on a niche tracker. I was messing around on my Fire stick last night and came across this place. They seem to have a fairly decent amount of NZ programming, along with a lot of other stuff. http://tubitv.com/

Speaking of OF, can I say...I just heard about the prequel and I am insanely excited about it. Brilliant!

I know same here. They've got a great cast lined up it looks like. Outrageous Fortune was one of my favorite shows so this will be a lot of fun I think.

Also, very glad to hear about Step Dave season 2!!!

I'm also looking forward to the new drama Michelle Langstone is going to be in....800 Words. She tweeted that they finished filming not long ago so really excited.

Totally agree with you by the way about the US constantly remaking shows. I would much rather watch the original. I'm not saying all the remakes have been terrible (The Office. I much preferred the US remake.), but honestly, it's just too much.

Looks a bit different in tone but I think it's going to be amazing. The first time I saw Esther Stephens in costume, my jaw was on the floor. That's just uncanny. And I was so stoked to see Falani in one of the trailers. Hilarious!

I had read about 800 Words but had not seen any casting, Langstone is always good! Looks like I'll be tuning in to that. Thanks!

I love Esther Stephens, I think she'll be fantastic. Have you been watching When We Go to War? Really excellent series.

Michelle is one of my favorite actors. I really wanted to watch season 4 of Go Girls, but I just could not get to liking any of the other characters.

I'm also very excited for the Chronicles of Shannara. One of my favorite fantasy novels from when I was young and it's going to have a really great cast: Manu Bennett, Jared Turner, John Rhys Davies to name a few.

And the best bit, though it's being filmed in NZ, it's going to be aired on MTV so no effort of using Tunnelbear or other ways of watching things online yaaay!! I believe it is supposed to air in July.

Esther is great! She really brought something to Go Girls. Glad to hear that When We Go To War was good, it's on the list. Cannot wait to see her Ngaire!

I do hear ya about the last season of Go Girls (5, actually). I'm sure, given my affinity for anything Rachel Lang has a hand in, that I would have come to love the other cast eventually. But knowing that it was the last season and I really had no motivation. Plus the whole cast change was a TOTAL surprise to me. It was quite annoying.

Good to hear about Shannara. I somehow missed reading those, despite them being right on my radar for my whole reading life. I did read a couple of the Landover books, though.

Speaking of fantasy worlds come to life, have you been watching Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell? Pretty good, based off the first episode. Beautifully done, no surprise from the BBC. About to go check out the second now!

Ha yeah, season 5. It's been so long since I watched it LOLOL Yeah, I would have preferred if they had just ended it instead of going on with all new characters.

I like the Landover books as well, have all those. The series is going to be based off Elfstones of Shannara (book 2 from the original trilogy).

YES!! I have been watching it!! It really is quite excellent and I LOVED episode 2!!! I like the small bits of comedy and I also think they cast it really really well.

Knowing you like NZ stuff....if you haven't seen the movie What We Do in the Shadows I highly recommend it. It was done by Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords and his friend Taika Waititi who did the movie Eagle vs Shark with him.

reply

Heck, I'd have probably stuck with that last season if there had been at least a cameo or two. Maybe one more chance to see Bronwyn Turei's smile.

So tonight's ep was fantastic! I very much like what I have seen so far. Agreed on the casting, they did an amazing job. I had been worried that they weren't going to do it justice but not anymore. How about Marc Warren, eh? Makes me miss Hustle even more (saw Kelly Adams in a show last night and started to miss it); can't beat a good heist!

Totally going to see What We Do In The Shadows, been on my list for a while. I thought that Eagle vs Shark was good, a sad little gem. Bunch of my shows just ended, so I might have to make that sooner, rather than later!

Marc Warren is brill in this. He looks a lot like I pictured the character years ago when I read the book.

I miss Hustle, too. It was one of my favorite shows.

You might have to watch it a few times, I know I did. Start laughing at one thing, and you've missed something else funny LOLOL Of course, I've also watched it so often because...Jemaine LOLOL

I still have a few shows to watch, Love Child, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and Game of Thrones.

However, this Memorial Day weekend I've been mostly binge watching The Almighty Johnsons.

You'll be sizzled to a crisp!

reply

I did have some doubts about Marc in the role because I was remembering his fairly dull Dracula a few years back with Sophia Myles. But all those are now gone! Good to meet another Hustle fan, though! Such a lovely and underrated show.

How are you liking The Almighty Johnsons? I recently binged the whole series. I watched the first one back when it aired and it didn't do anything for me but the second time did the trick. I have a bit of a man crush on Shane Cortese and it was great watching him be such a *beep*

I am three years behind on GoT. And I don't even care! That Love Child caught my eye when it started, I assume that it's pretty decent?. Always dig a good period piece. Speaking of period pieces...only four more sleeps!!

Have you checked out No Offence? Shaping up to be really good. Not your average, dull (to me, anyway) cop show. Good cast, good writing. And funny, too.

All you can do as an intelligent person,is to try and not to add to the sum of human misery. Robyn H

reply

I never saw his Dracula, so guess I'm lucky I watched with an open mind, there.

I LOVE TAJ!! This is my third watch of it. The only thing I hate about it is that it's over. I wish for a season 4, but know that will never happen *sigh* After watching it, I had to watch everything Jared Turner was in, which was how I happened to find Go Girls.

Shane is freakin brilliant as Colin/Loki. Speaking of him, did you see Nothing Trivial? He's fantastic in that, too, though he's a nice guy in it LOL

Love Child is really really good. Granted, it's quite girly with it being about a lady doctor and this home for wayward pregnant teens, but still some good good drama. And Jessica Marais never disappoints.

I KNOW!! Really excited. This is a banner weekend for me. Phoenix Comicon on Friday and Saturday and then great new shows to watch!!

I love No Offence!! It's gripping and funny and the cast is just excellent. I just finished watching the most recent episode. Man that Emmett Scanlan gets everywhere doesn't he LOLOL

Also, because I'm a dance show fan, I'm so going to watch New Zealand's Dancing with the Stars. Ben Barrington and Siobhan Marshall are going to be in it so yeah, how can I not

You'll be sizzled to a crisp!

I sorta came to Go Girls that way too; not Jared though but Rachel Lang. She seems to have a knack for creating characters that I end up loving. This is why I will definitely be watching When We Go To War.

Of course I have seen Nothing Trivial (About A Broken Heart), fell in love with that one instantly. It's just so gentle and lovely and fun. I think that we lucked out when they decided to let them make an ending. That was a suck day of Cliffhanger/Oh, it's cancelled...

Glad to hear you are enjoying No Offence, just caught up with the latest and it's still great! Haha, had to look up your Emmett. He isn't the Scanlan that has been impressing me on this one, but he was good here. >: P I am a long time Elaine Cassidy fan and a somewhat new Alexandra Roach one; those ladies are what caught my eye on this one. I have found myself wishing the "crime of the week" would go away and they would just get down to solving the main case, though. Guess I'm gripped, too!

I'll leave the dance shows all to you! Perhaps I'll find a clip or two and see how Siobhan is faring. I did just catch her in Find Me A Maori Bride (a mockumentary) and it was okay. Much went over my head and she only had a bit part in the first one.

I see you are at the Con now, hope it's amazing, fun and wonderful! Have a blast, make sure you have enough energy for Westside on Sun!

All you can do as an intelligent person,is to try and not to add to the sum of human misery. Robyn H

reply

Well, if you like Alexandra Roach you should (if you haven't already) check out "Utopia".

I like seeing Elaine in a different role, before I'd only ever seen her playing a bitch in The Paradise.

Yesterday at Comicon was good. Tiring though. I was getting an autograph for my brother and the actress was an hour late. I had skipped lunch to get in the line early, too. So I was really tired and really hungry. So I left at like 3:30, but I had been there since 9am.

However, I go back today....and I'm very excited because today I get to meet David Morrissey. *dies*

Woah! What a crazy week. Non-stop at work and I have so much catching up to do.

How was meeting David Morrissey? Hope you had a blast! Very nice of you to do that for your brother the day before, though. Who was the actress?

Of course I've seen Utopia! I thought it was magnificent all the way 'round. Hugely underrated and I think it will become more appreciated as time passes.

I did see Westside, by the way. Loved it! The first scene with Esther gave me serious chills. It's almost spooky how she does that. The other highlight was seeing the house again. Going to wait until I watch it again this Sunday for more in-depth commentary on the proper thread.

Hope your week was a good one!

Also......please help. I can't get the theme to The Delivery Man out of my head. Been there for weeks.

I hear that.

OMG he is soooo NICE!! I got a pic with him and his autograph. I chose a pic from the series Blackpool for him to sign and he was a bit surprised and happy. Turns out it was his favorite series to do. He said he had so much fun.

I got Charisma Carpenter's autograph for him. She was very nice (even if she was an hour late)

I think there's a thing going round the internet to try and get a series 3 made of Utopia. Would be really cool if they did. I loved the casting on it. Though every time I see Neil Maskell in anything I'm like oooo Arby's in this! LOLOL And how amazing was Rose Leslie as young Milner!

Oh yes, I LOVED Westside!! Such a great job.

And wow...how about Strange and Norrell....I really felt for Strange. Can't wait for tomorrow's episode.

Not sure how I can help with your earworm problem there. I'm trying to think of another song to suggest that might help but I can't think of a thing yikes

This might help (esp if you've not heard Esther sing, she's good): https://estherstephensandthemeans.bandcamp.com/

reply

Sheesh, all this stuff getting in the way of me relaxing and watching TV...

That's awesome about Morrissey! I remember Blackpool, bet that was a nice surprise after fifty bazillion pics of him in an eyepatch. La bibbida bibba dum!

I'm not 100% sure about another series of Utopia. I mean, I'd love to see one but I'm not sure that they could pull it off and have it still be great. It'd be lovely to be proven wrong, though. And yes, Rose Leslie was incredible there. What a bold way to start a series. Another for the re-watch pile.

Thanks for that link! I've been meaning to check her out for a while. Half scared to, for fear it would be bad. Digging it so far.

I am so far behind. Still not caught up with Strange and Norrell but that's the sort of thing I like to do in bursts anyway. Stay in that mood for a binge. I'm hoping to this week's No Offence tonight, there's a show that keeps getting better! I'd promised myself that I'd weigh in somewhere else first, though.

Also, I am buying this album. Damn.

I know right! Work *sigh*

Now that I've met him I think I'm an even bigger fan.

I'd like to see Wilson Wilson as full on baddie. ..that would be fun I think.

Oh man No Offence had me on the edge of my seat! Only 2 eps left aggghh

Agreed. I get paid tomorrow & am totally buying it!

I'm going to check out that new series The Interceptor. I've heard it's so bad it's good!

I know this discussion is old but I just found it today. I went to tubitv.com and was so happy to find Outrageous Fortune. I wanted to thank you for posting that link. I've been missing the show since it was taken off Netflix. Hulu only has the first season (for the past two years). Love that show and it's so nice to be able to have it on while I do other things or watch before going to bed. I'm hoping there's other NZ or Australian shows that are available.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the heads up on tubitv and Westside. I had never heard of either of those or Outrageous Fortune.
