I heard it was a combination of the filming conflicting with her promotion for "The Favourite" and not wanting to play second riddle to Saoirse Ronan.

Emma Stone is more known so I can't see her in a movie and be a support to another similar age female.

I just found out that the role was originally intended for Emma Stone. As much as I love her, I just can't picture it. She's a bit too old, and comes off way too 'modern' for a period piece such as this. Even her face is 'modern' looking.
