At least I get the hype for this film then for Ladybird

I think Greta Gerwig is a talent, and in my opinion I think Francis Ha is a masterpiece. But I just never got the hype for her debut directorial film Ladybird, the way the critic's were going you thought it was greatest film ever. In fact, it was a good coming of age film with a award worthy turn from Laurie Metcalf, I didn't even think Saoirse Ronan's turn was that award worthy. I think the 7.4 on IMDB is more realistic rating then the 99% on Rotten Tomatoes by the critics.

But I think with Little Women, I can get on the hype train of Gerwig. It's by no means a masterpiece but it's a pretty damn good movie. Gerwig clearly pours her heart and soul into the material. Brings out some wonderful performances especially from Saoirse Ronan but especially Florence Pugh, who steals the film as Amy. I think her performance in Midsommar is more award worthy, but she's great in Little Women. And the best bits for me are anytime she's on screen, and her romance with Laurie (Timothee Chalamet) was the best part for me. Saoirse is very good too. Laura Dern and Chris Cooper are very good as well. I think it's smart from Gerwig to keep Emma Watson role quite short as they can, as she can't act to save her life.

Also loved that it feels so much different to 1994 version. I do think by the end it drags a little but overall it's a solid 8/10 and I can get behind the hype for this film. Although I don't understand the uproar some had when Gerwig didn't get Best Director nom. I think the Oscar's made the right decision, I think far better directed films last year.
