I don't understand why people have such a problem with this scene. All Amy was telling Laurie is she wanted to marry well and as I took it, she could control who she loved and would love her suitor/future husband. Everything else she goes on to say is true - at the time this movie takes place once women married they lost control of everything.
If the subject had come up with Jo, she might have given this as a reason why she would not get married. Amy was willing to compromise and Jo would not.
Just my take on this apparently controversial scene.
