I feel Don Mancini is ruining his own creation by trying new things with it!

I watched Cult and the one thing I kept thinking was that I missed how just simple and fun the original Child's play films used to be. Don Mancini should stop trying to do so much and realize that this franchise is about a killer doll, no need for extra bells and whistles. Every time he tries to do more the films becomes a disappointment. A lot of people has part 2 as their favorite because it was fun, cheesy, leave your brain at the door entertainment and that is perfectly fine because it is a film about a killer doll after all,it's no Twin Peaks. Seed of Chucky failed because Mancini went nuts and experimented with the franchise by adding a really over stuffed plot (Jenifer Tilly who looks exactly like Tiffany ? Glen/Glenda? etc..) then he redeemed itself with Curse of Chucky, it was back to basic and that is why it did well as a direct to video film.Unfortunately Mancini again lost it and gave us a very messy story with this new chapter , his explanation for several possessed good guy's doll is ridiculous and confusing at the same time. I was looking forward Andy's return but he was not used properly and that is sad for a legacy character such as Andy, he really should have been the main focus of the story instead of Nica (Seriously Mancini seems obsessed with this character now). I really, really wanted to like this film but it is just above Seed of Chucky. Don Mancini really needs to realize that simplicity is the key for Child's play.

When Cult leaked about a week ago, I saw pleadings on twitter from horror people begging people not to watch the leaked versions and if you really love horror, you'd support this movie financially because it's so rare to have the original creator still at the helm of a series. And now that I've seen it, I'm like... maybe he shouldn't be, though.

I bought it as well and I was thinking the same thing. I was like "I waited patiently to buy this blu ray and that is what I got"I know a lot of people liked it but personally it made me miss the simplicity and fun of the first three Chucky..

The #1 problem with bad movies is too much plot. Keep the plot simple and do everything else really well.

You nailed it sir. It's also worth noting that Don Mancini's original Child's Play script was a hot mess. It was due to the rewrites of Tom Holland and John Lafia that Child's play became what it became. Then John Lafia went on to direct Child's Play 2, and helped clean up that script as well. So the Chucky we all know and love is really the love child of Holland/Lafia even though Mancini gets all the writing credit. Mancini has ben vocal about how he hates the whole voodoo angle of Chucky.

To be fair to Mancini he did write Child's Play 3, Bride, and Curse all by himself so the man is capable of delivering a good product. But Cult and Seed are examples of how badly he can go off the rails when he's given free reign to do whatever he wants. So all in all, this is a guy who is at his best when he has help. Which isn't a bad thing

I agree, I think Seed, and Cult should’ve been re-written with better writers including Don Mancini. He did an alright job with Cult, but the story, and characters could’ve been written better.
