A Film Not By Stanley Kubrick

We watched this film tonight not knowing anything about it in advance. There were some okay things in it, but the miscasting of the main character was so off that I started suspecting (as I did when I watched "Upstream Color") that the only explanation is that the director cast HIMSELF in the lead role. But could anyone be so arrogant, I asked? The classical music started to suggest that he very well could be.

But then the Schubert appeared, same piece from "Barry Lyndon", the HEIGHT of Sundancey pretentiousness to overtly ape Kubrick, and then the movie exploded by going synth on it, AND THEN HE EVEN USED THE FREAKIN' HANDEL PIECE FROM THE SAME MOVIE -- AND IN THE STYLE OF WALTER CARLOS, A LA CLOCKWORK ORANGE!!!

I started to throw things at my $3000 TV --

-- AND THEN HE USED THE CARPET FROM "THE SHINING".

At that point I was certain, this guy is pulling a full Shane Carruth on us, and ruining his own movie by starring in it.

And we waited and waited for the movie to end so we could read the credits...

...and it was true.

Please, fella, you've got some talent, but never star in your own film again.

"Please, fella, you've got some talent, but never star in your own film again."

but then how would you expect him to retain "Creative Control"?
