Will someone please fill the world in...

...that "alexia" is not a name. Alexa, Alexandra, Alexis... Not alexia. Alexia is the Latin word for the inability to read. What a terrible thing to name a child.

Alexia would be the feminine form derived from the ancient Greek male name Alexis (Alexios). The name itself is largely a Greek name (as per its origins), though other languages and cultures use it as well. If memory serves, the name meant guardian or protector. Feminine forms of masculine names have long been common practice and this one is not a special case as it has been used for over two millennia.

The medical term alexia did not come into use until the late 19th century which surely put a slight damper on parents in the more Western portions of the world from naming their children with this particular name. This does not dull the point that this name was long-used well before the particular French doctor whose name escapes me momentarily discovered the condition.

If it was a name given to a child of Greek descent, that would be one thing. You are correct. However, that doesn't mean I don't cringe when I hear it from parents (or character designers) that just chose it out of thin air, not knowing what the modern connotation was.

People from various cultures sometimes adopt names from other cultures. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. One might as well say that non-Greeks should never use the name Alexander. Here are some notable people who have the name Alexia:

What's the big deal about a name? I know more girls named Wendy than I can count. Until Peter Pan, that name didn't even exist...in any way, shape or form. People make up names for characters in books, movies and television shows all the time. It's fantasy.
