Low ratings from people who haven't even seen it?

There are already 2 threads complaining about this just because Manson is involved... It's actually a pretty solid drama. I believe the group in the film is based on the real life ATWA group. It's not a gruesome Horror movie glorifying the murders and it's not for regular blue collar Joe Schmo stiffs. I think a lot of people would like this, especially if they're familiar with the various counterculture groups/interests out there.

Just finished watching it on Netflix. I gave it a 5.

The subject matter is fine...I didn't really find anything offensive, because Nick was kind of the voice of the audience, telling Conrad how distasteful his actions were (wearing the Manson tshirt at the murder sites, etc). So the filmmakers were aware of what people would be thinking and addressed it.

I just couldn't stand the actor playing Conrad. He was so obnoxious and that laugh grated my nerves. He seemed as though he was trying to channel Zach Galifianakis and it was not working for me.

Overall, I was fairly impressed with what they did for 40,000. The script was pretty good, and it had some good moments. The actor playing Nick was very good, as were some of the others.

The movie more or less centered on the strained relationship between two brothers...similar to "Rainman". The Manson plot was basically a backdrop to the drama.

I personally enjoyed the movie and found it well paced and acted. It also reminded me of many other "brotherly" movies where you have one who is irresponsible, flaky, and lackadaisical...and one who is a straight and serious family man trying to slap some sense into the irresponsible one.

Let's face it, Manson sells. Would you have watched it if it didn't have the Manson connection? Maybe not. Many people think they know all about Manson and that everything they know must be included in this movie. It sure is included in there memories when they think about a movie that includes Manson.

If they watched the movie they would have a much better idea what the movie is actually about. One would think anyway.

I saw no blood, gore, or much of any detail about the parts of the murders that could have been included. This movie could have been a horror movie, but it isn't. It isn't, except in the minds of who think they know the movie, but haven't seen it.
