What? The rock is safe!?!

Why on earth would the guy who "cheated" by having the creature INSIDE the rock rather than behind below or above! Blatant disregard of the assignment requirements set by judges this week. I rather stinky job than one who didn't even do what he was supposed to do.

Sets a bad example- that its ok to not follow orders, as long as it isn't ugly? Russ did what he was supposed to do!!!

Doesn't this upset any of you? Opinions or remarks?

reply

His was just less bad.

It was up to each contestant to determine what "hide in place" meant. There was no standard of what "hide in place" meant. The rock guy's (forget his name) interpretation was bad but not an automatic disqualification.

I don't even think Russ's creature hid very well. There were lots of issues with Russ's creature from the design (where were its legs) to the coloring (looked flat on camera).

reply

Do you mean "hide in plane sight"? Because that was the challenge. Ben's design had to many negatives, it to had no legs, hidden in the rock, looked like the character from dinosaurs (that should have been a instant dq), and looked to cartoony. But as much as I liked russ I knew he was gone, it just felt like brian was extra hard on him since the third episode. And the only reason he lasted this long is because jake bowed out.

God invented boobs to make men happy, but Adam pissed him off so he attached them to women.

reply

Josh bowed out, not Jake. (No, he shouldn't have joined up in the first place, IMO)
Just imagine I've written something in-jokey and randumb here, okay?

reply

Bah, thats right.

the rock one was my fav lol. after that was grass & lilypad

reply

Even the judges said that he didn't follow the directions and it was not in plain sight, how is that not a dq? So... It's up to interpretation of what is ok and not? I believe that "hide in plain sight" is clear enough of a requirement and he should have been dq'd

reply

you're regurgitating the narrative instead of formulating your own opinions

How was the grass creature hiding in plain sight any more than the rock creature? The back was all the stock grass and then it popped up to reveal the crappy creature that shouldn't have beat the lily pad. The rock was much higher quality work even if it was similar to a Dinosaurs creature.

reply

I agree. The rock is like a turtle's shell: camouflage and protection. We wouldn't say a turtle is separate from its shell.

reply

The rock creature may have been a little of cheat, but as creation, it ruled. The painting, the texturing, the personality...it was a great looking creature. I absolutely HATE the judges who bring up the "cartoony" element. Since when do these creature have to look realistic? It's diametrically opposite of what Henson in all about. The cartoony complaint is just flat out stupid and illogical. And how the hell was Ben supposed to know the rock monster resembled a character from Dinosaurs? Who cares?

As a person I don't like Ben...his ego is huge and he clearly thinks he's better than everybody else, but his talent cannot be denied...unlike Russ who loves to tote his experience around while producing mediocre creatures week after week. I'm shocked it took him this long to get the ax.

I think you're mixing up "Muppets" with "The Jim Henson Creature Shop" while the JHCS has and will make cartoony looking characters (the Dinosaurs in Dinosaurs) they are also known for making creepy scary things (Skeksis) and realistic animatronic puppets (Buddy).

I will agree with you about Ben's attitude. It totally turned me off through most the series. I personally was a fan of Robert and Melissa.

One thing I will say, Ben did a good job or keeping Tina on the task that she needed to be on.

As for him not knowing that his rock monster looked like Ethel, well there's the fact that these guys most likely know more about what the JHCS has done than most people, and the fact that there were pictures and puppets from older works in the shop. Baby Sinclaire was there.

Personally, his rock monster reminded me more of Moira from The Neverending Story.

You're telling me the Skeksis aren't cartoony? Things can be cartoony and scary.

reply

I don't see the Skeksis as cartoony as Kermit and crew, or even Scred from the SNL Muppets.

Actually, the two most cartoony things in Dark Crystal for me are the Podlings and Fizzgig. Everything else doesn't really fit in "cartoony" for me.
