'too cartoony'

I'm sorry, but what? This is damn Jim Henson creature shop. Of course it's cartoony. I mean the only thing that looked real in Labyrinth is when the sheepdog would be a puppet instead of a real dog.

I don't understand that critique. Trust me, I'm ALL for realistic things. But when I think of Jim Henson, I don't think of incredible realism.

It should move believably and not have tacky obvs fur and robotics, and seem legitimately alive... etc... but as far as looking kinda goofy or not like a realistic, real animal...again, I feel like that's part of the Jim Henson-ness.

(Personally I didn't like Ben's either, but I felt that "cartoony" critique wasn't valid. And they said it with the lilypad head too, which was probably my favorite.)

If this were Stan Winston's Challenge I would understand the criticism.

Exactly.

exactly, I fully agree with you.
The ones they called "too cartoony" were my favorites. The camo swamp creatures & the talking heads were really cool imo, I'm hoping there is a season 2 (maybe with some behind-the-scenes of the screen test set-building?)

I like this show so far, but I have to agree with this. These are fantastical creatures, making "cartoony" a criticism didn't feel right for me. The lilypad was my favorite too.

Right, it made me scratch my head and wonder if I missed something in the criteria for this week's challenge. Also the grass bush bird thing didn't look like a real animal either...yet...that was okay. So, I guess semi-cartoonish but not too much....?

With those eyes they keep using, there's no way it's NOT going to be cartoony.

They've said that numerous times and it pisses me off to no end. I know these are the professionals that do this for a living, but they seem to slam these people for criteria that is NEVER established. It almost seems like they're too hard on them a lot of the time. Who gives a F--K if the rock monster reminded one dude of a previous creation? Was Ben supposed to know this? Are they supposed to have a massive list of stuff they can't accidentally emulate? I mean come on...it's not fair.

I just can't help but get pissed that this place of supposed imagination knocks these people for USING theirs.

Agreed completely.
