Debt Kills

As one of their leaders had advocated, you can't get yourself into debt like that. The second that Tower had piled on the debt, they were doomed. And, when the bankers flocked in, all they would want to do is burn the business to the ground. Any business needs to run as lean and mean as possible. When you take on debt like that, you are effectively handing your business over to someone else.

As much a visionary as Russ, the leader of Tower was, he definitely lost his way when his ideals overwhelmed his business.

It is tough when you have become so ingrained in your ideology. And, Russ just wasn't ready for Napster and digital music. He also didn't want to sell CD singles, he just wanted people to buy the full albums. This is particularly one thing that I never got: The fight against CD singles. I loved them, but they were tough to find in lots of places. And, Tower followed that thought process.

You can see this continuing disconnect in their current website. It is great there is somehow a Tower Records around. But, their website, http://www.towerrecords.com, really isn't anything you'd want to spend time on.

They usually had a few songs, with the hit the featured song. This was at a time when CD's were pretty expensive, $15.99 or so. And, before Napster, etc. So, I liked getting the hit song, plus a couple of extras, instead of buying the whole album.
