Good, but not great, troubled romanctic duo

Two troubled people, looking for a place to be themselves, to be at home. You want them to draw together, to overcome their past. His, a troubled family life, and he avoids connection by becoming a railroad hobo, until he stops in a small town. Her, a mean, controlling husband, and she leaves the sophisticated, urban life of New York City for her small home town.

He seems to have an important relationship with "Cowboy". But in a very abbreviated, unexplained scene, he dies. You're just left wondering, what happened? Why is the character even in the movie?

She has a tense relationship with her husband, who apparently wants to control her. She needs $30,000 to retain a lawyer. She apparently sells her condo in New York to raise the money, but the divorce is not finalized before the movie ends. The unfulfilled tension of the relationship is like air escaping a balloon. Where did it go? Why was it in the movie?

It just feels like too much information is left unsaid, leaving us to guess who and how they actually come together. Or do they?

Great music throughout.
