ESPN 30 For 30.

I just watched a new ESPN 30 For 30 documentary on Sunday, February 8, 2015, called Of Miracles and Men. It was on this topic as well. So what is the difference between that and this Red Army documentary? Has anyone seen both? It looks like I'll have to wait until March before Red Army plays in my area.

I'm going to watch Red Army today as it's showing in Minneapolis. I just watched the espn 30 for 30 Of Miracles and Men and think it's a must see. I'm excited to see what the feature film documentary will bring to the table that ESPN didn't or vice versa. I was born in the eighties so only heard stories of the 80 Olympics from the American prospective. This topic is a powerful insight into the USSR and the cold war and the human condition.

I also just found out that all 30 for 30s are available on Netflix, exclusively.

moss-Robert,

So how was Red Army? What were the differences between it and Of Miracles and Men?

reply

I was wondering if it was the same thing. I don't get why decades later, two exact same things come out at the same time.

Feb. 22nd was the 35 anniversary of the Miracle on Ice.

Team USA upsets the Olympic hockey world by beating the Red Army hockey team.

The Red Army Team was an unbelievable team that won numerous championships

No body thought USA would come close to beating them. The game led to the famous phrase. "Do You Believe in Miracles?"

I remembered that Russian team. They were tuff, highly skilled with military precision. Incredible strength and stamina. And they knew how to play the game.

I haven't seen the ESPN program. However, the theatrical release uses the events of 1980, which are relatively well known, as the starting point for a saga that stretches over the rest of the decade and into the next, most of which will be new to most viewers, especially those outside of Russia. In fact, there is an epilogue that updates things to the present, and contains a few twists that are likely to come as a surprise, given what these athletes went through 20-30 years ago.

I saw the Red Army movie in the theaters and it was good. Anyone know when this ESPN special will air again?

I saw both. There a few differences, some of them major. Most were around coaches, Tarasov, Tikhonov, and how Fetisov made it into the NHL.

First the Red Army movie says that Tarasov lost his job for taking his team off the ice after a goal was disallowed. Brezhnev was in the stands and was pissed with the delay. So it cost Tarasov his job. In 30/30 they claim that Tarasov would not throw a game against Czechoslovakia.

Tikhonov died in Nov but the doc made no mention like it did for one for of the players who died after the interview.

Fetisov's journey to the NHL is also different in both stories. Red Army claims he was blacklisted and went to train with Tarasov. 30/30 shows that same footage of him training with Tarasov and claims that was when he visited his coach to say goodbye before flying to NJ.

Son of Tony,

Thanks for your reply. I also finally just saw Red Army. It played in my town this weekend for the first time. It is kind of like watching the same thing twice. There was some overlap but Red Army just talked about the 1980 Olympics briefly. The rest was about the team, politics, and Fetisov.

I also noticed the part where Tarasov was relieved. I was sitting there in the theater going, wait a second, in the ESPN doc they said something else. Wait, what?

Also, the ESPN doc made it sound like Fetisov was the first Russian ever in the NHL. In Red Army, they say Mogilny was first, then Larinov, then they say Fetisov was able to go. I don't remember those details back then. But this was just another difference in the two docs. And no mention of Sergei Pryakhin in either doc.

Kind of weird that two documentaries presents different facts about basic things.

reply

That is because Sergei Pryakhin was a no body.

Maybe. But he was still the first. If Jackie Robinson sucked, would you stat a documentary on blacks in baseball with Larry Doby?

Jamie Lee Curtis survived Halloween, the Fog, Prom Night and a Terror Train & now she can't poop!

reply

Why would the USSR willingly throw a game against the Czechs? That makes no sense to me if the USSR wants itself to be seen as an unbeatable juggernaut.
Still, it was sad to see Tarasov, who devoted his life to the game, living in a tiny shack alone while Tikhonov gets feted as a great coach and getting the red carpet treatment. Just as well he didn't allow himself to be interviewed.
