I think the question we all have is (SPOILER)

Did the Pastor do anything sexual with an overnighter? It's one thing if it was just some guy he met on grinder or something, but if he was having sex with overnighters, there was a far worse problem (abuse of power, etc.) that the movie didn't touch on at all.

reply

I really doubt that is a question "we all have." Since you asked,no I don't think that he was abusing the overnighters.

Yes it is. From what I gathered he had some sort of sexual contact with at least one male overnighter. I doubt very seriously if that was the only one.

reply

Exactly. In the film, we see that he is seemingly spending all of his time with the overnighters.

If he didn't do anything with an Overnighter, they should have had made that clear in the movie. It's the first thing that popped into my mind when they said he had same-sex indiscretions, considering he was around all of these men, all the time.

reply

No It actually is. The movie presented him in the light of a martyred savior for the 1st hour (although, like others on the forums, I feel most of his verbal ticks gave him away to be a more complicated figure). But the sudden and kind of manipulative revelations in the last 10 mins make me suddenly question many of the statements that he made in the early half of the film- a sense of control he exercised over the overnighters.
Honestly it also really detracted from what this film was about in its first 85 minutes- of an post-collapse small town America.

reply

I think in the first half he shown as man trying to do the righteous thing. To organize his community to help out the disenfranchised flocking to their town for opportunity. Instead of taking their fear and anger which should be directed at the oil companies out on them. He seems somewhat flawed in some of his tactics but even with the revelation in the last ten minutes he is still pretty much decent human being compared to community.

I got the sense that his "second hand man" that left in the red truck after berating him may have been involved. His words were harsh enough that if he wasn't the blackmailer he at least knew of jay's situation. Either him or the unpleasant, vindictive New Yorker from earlier. Amazing film.

Perhaps left to ambiguity is for the best. Adds some mystery and privacy as well.

This is a documentary, not a fictional movie.

reply

So things can't be withheld?
Let me tell you. About every documentary withholds stuff to for their own reasons. Maybe he felt the viewers didn't need to know. Commiting adultery was enough.

No. Not major parts. You think anyone will ever do a documentary on Charles Manson and not ask about the murders? You think anyone will do a documentary about George Lucas and not mention star wars?

reply

Interesting that you went straight to that idea although there was nothing in the movie to even suggest that. The crazy guy who left in the red truck said something along the lines of "you lied to your congregation", so I'm assuming he's RVs ons who blackmailed the pastor. I'm thinking it may gave had something to do with manipulating the congregation into voting to allow the overnighters to stay there, or maybe some sort of money changing hands that wasn't supposed to. I don't ghink it was anythjng sexual, although there was definitely a closeted vibe from the pastor!

reply

You my friend are sick in the head.

reply

not as sick as that pastor. freaky stuff going on in that church

reply

How is he sick?

reply

It's not stated but I think there are implications of it. I'm particularly thinking of the Overnighter from New York who talks about going to the papers.

It felt like there was something more significant going on between him and the Pastor.

reply

I was wondering that too. All that hugging he did took on more meaning.

reply

I watched this with a group that supports the homeless. We got to see an extra 20 minute video that was filmed 6 months after the film came out. He addresses thus question and says the person was not an Overnighter.
