Doesn't anybody tell stories linearly anymore?

Okay, I can understand having some flashbacks in a movie, but this kept jumping around in time. My wife and I spent too much time and effort trying to figure out, "Is this before or after the landing?"

It's like we were experiencing a rip in the space-time continuum or a temporal causality loop or something.
