WIll this film be worth seeing in IMAX?

Hello everyone! How are you all? Hope everyone is well.

I was just curious because they have said that this film will be shot in digital IMAX cameras. I did see the trailer in IMAX, and it looked amazing in it, but I was wondering if the whole film would be good in IMAX.

Thanks for answering and have a good day!

IMO I prefer watching the versions in IMAX of the movies . this one was shoot in IMAX cameras. I will watch it in IMAX ??

reply

Yep Id go for IMAX. I've heard the vast majority (90% ish) is shot with the new IMAX digitals. This means you will be able to watch almost the entire movie in the bigger aspect ratio (1.9:1 I believe, rather than a standard widescreen 2.35:1).

This means a far more immersive experience! I'm sure the plane sequence will be fantastic especially in the larger aspect ratio, and will be one of the scenes where the new cameras are fully utilised.

A gripping movie based on real life events and is definitely worth a
watch - go ahead and watch this movie without any hesitation. This was the 1st time that a FULL movie was shot using the Brand New Arri Alexa IMAX 65mm cameras, which only a few directors can or are licensed to use by IMAX! This resulted in Crystal clear images, projected by Dual Projectors on the Giant 42 feet high, 65 feet wide screen of IMAX, along with the powerful 12000 Watts IMAX proprietary sound system that will make your hairs stand!

Hats off to Hanks and Eastwood for mesmerizing story telling of reality based incident with very ease. Use of flashbacks was brilliant concept for an engaging audience till the climax. Great performance from Eckhart and Linney, too. Simulation thing added some entertainment in the second half. Hanks trusts his inner soul rather than the machine.

Eastwood's last directorial effort American Sniper carried too many
scripts - stringed with too many sentiments, but with Sully he has
redeemed himself.

But dont forget that majority of plane sequence is CGI (except you considered plane mock-up on water or cockpit to be, you know, plane sequence. So very little to none of the plane sequence to be shot with real camera.

Plane sequences are good in IMAX. The rest not so much. Giant close ups of people talking mostly. Some movement looked jerky and/or blurred to me (Sydney IMAX). Personally, I'd say watch in standard.

Well, the trailer looked awesome in IMAX... saw it during the Jason Bourne film.

Whether or not this is worthy of IMAX just because of that... not sure.

one review on here said the flying sequences looked great, but the dialogue segments, not so much.

But that's their opinion.

Ill be seeing it in IMAX.

If it says Filmed in IMAX, then i am "Ass in SEAT"

I agree. Saw the trailer in IMAX before Star Trek Beyond, and it was one of the best cinema experiences I ever felt.

Have a good day!

Too bad it's only going to be in IMAX for 2 weeks before The Magnificent Seven takes over (and that only gets a week because of Deepwater Horizon).

reply

I might want to see Deep water Horizon in IMAX instead... looks pretty epic... not sure.

I just saw it in IMAX. your answer is YES..!!!

Excellent film ; although we all know the outcome, the IMAX had you right there with all of it...including the depiction of the actual event.

In my opinion it is not worth the extra for IMAX.

Clint Eastwood doesn't do much to really WOW with the wider format & he relies far too heavily on close ups during the action when he should go wide. Also it doesn't help that more than two thirds of the film takes place in dull nondescript interior locations like hotel rooms, conference rooms, or bathrooms.

You're not really going to have a WOW visual experience.

There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

I just saw the film and would definitely see it in IMAX. Might be disturbingly immersive though. Unlike Star Wars, or other films, you will actually be on an airplane at some point!

I'm a film graduate who went to see this at IMAX just last night as IMAX (Sydney) is about to undergo renovations (i.e. demolishment) and we have no idea of when it will reopen. Incidentally, it was my very first IMAX experience (funny considering that I'm the "film guy"). The main benefit of seeing this in IMAX is the aspect ratio, which allows for a more natural field of vision (and for that, you'd have to sit as closely to the centre of the screen as possible). I think that this film could have benefited from being shot in 3D, as there were several aerial shots (and the scenes in the cockpit and the rescue scenes would have looked great), and even the dialogue-heavy scenes convey a nice sense of depth which could have been enhanced with 3D. I think it was a real missed opportunity considering that they were shooting with IMAX cameras anyway. They may as well have gone all the way to make it a real visual treat (though I don't particularly blame them for not doing so as I'm not expecting this film to be particularly profitable).

My main gripe with the film (and it's purely a technical gripe), which *may* come down to the quality of the print that was issued to IMAX, the equipment used or perhaps my own inexperience/lack of knowledge, but many scenes looked quite soft, and there was noticeable motion blur during whatever little motion that does occur in indoor scenes (and most nighttime outdoor scenes). They were frequent enough to cause distraction and make me ponder how the work was shot as opposed to immersing myself in the story. Thankfully, this is not an issue during the pivotal rescue scenes, and I'm sure that this will make a more impressive Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray once they are released (with a smaller, but ultimately sharper image).

I generally despise Hollywood films, and I went in without any knowledge of the subject matter, criticisms etc. and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the film (I was struggling to stay awake watching Suicide Squad, which I was dragged to by friends just a few weeks earlier). I don't think that you will be missing anything by watching this at a standard cinema, as I wasn't "wowed" by the film (and I'm saying this as a *first time* IMAX goer), but the film is worth seeing, however you may choose to see it.

You are absolutely too polite to be posting on IMDB. Please leave and come back after you've become bitter and hate life and want to make yourself feel better by attacking random internet strangers with your keyboard.

I experienced the same there. My first IMAX experience, too. Wasn't impressed. Haven't read anyone else saying similar so maybe it was just Sydney IMAX that messed up somehow? Or maybe that's what happens when your too close to an IMAX screen?
