That Every Man Quality

I'd often post on controversial artists' boards, where they'd say that people didn't look at the kind of person someone was in their private lives, but they only cared about his performances. Some would even denigrate anyone who paid attention to an actor's private life.

One of the reasons Tom Hanks has been as popular as he has been is because he seems to be like a regular guy in real life -- regular guy who's a multi-millionaire, but a regular guy. If that image were destroyed, his career would be in the tank as much as anyone else whose image was destroyed. Why the people who worship folks like Mel Gibson or Michael Jackson can't see that is beyond me. People always want the reality to line up with the PR -- no one's picking on their little darlings. That's the way it always is.

Imagine if folks found out at the time that Spencer Tracy wasn't really what he seemed to be. And he wasn't....
