I'm getting tired of all these pointless movies.

Honestly, can sombody tell me the appeal of this film? Sure it was pretty to look at and the actress did a fine job, but the movie was completely pointless.

This is another case of a movie with a weak plot being dragged out further then it should. Perhaps this would of worked better as a short film.

Treasure hunters everywhere must be insulted. Treasure hunting is fun. Plus that part of the story wasn't even true.

Here's a novel way to look at it: how about going into each movie mindful of the notion that every single person on this planet - all 7 billion of them - has a story a tell, and just because that person's story doesn't appeal to you personally doesn't make it pointless? Then, you might start having a better appreciation for slower-paced films that may or may not have ambiguous endings. Most of the viewers of the same film you just watched do not suffer from depression, but they were able to sympathize with the main character and wanted to go on that journey with her. That is why this movie is currently rated 7.2, not 2.7.

This absolutely would not have worked better as a short film. The entire Japan segment alone was necessary for establishing her mental state and how it was deteriorating.

Did we really need to watch for 45 mins just how depressed she was? I get it... she's depressed. When Kumiko finally get on the plane, she bumps into 3 or 4 different people, walks around in the woods, the end.

I get that people have a story to tell, this though was barely a story. The premise was great. "Japanese lady finds a copy of Fargo and mistakes it for a treasure map and goes to look for the treasure"

A great premise does not equal a great movie. You got to have some plot and substance to it. This movie literally had none. The whole film was the premise alone.

Yes. That is exactly the issue here. Most people who have seen it and enjoyed it were able to do so because they were able to put themselves in the protagonist's shoes and experience the journey from her point of view. Apparently, your approach is: show one scene of her frowning alone in an apartment and move on. Nothing wrong with watching that as a completely unattached observer, but you're never going to appreciate this type of movie if you do. It is hardly pointless.

I agree, ive just finished watching it and I feel cheated, for me its one of the worst movies of its kind...no actually plot and it drags everything out as long as it can and BAM a crap ending....ive seen many movies like this and this is by far the worst.

I going into this movie thought she things there is buried money, depressed goes on this quest meets loads of new people finds at the end there is no money at all BUT while on this journey she has learned some lessons and changes her life for the better...now that would have been good lol

reply

That would have been so damn cliche.

I kinda would've preferred if she had become "that crazy lady" who's always looking for the treasure. Thus, Kumiko would have found some sort of purpose if not happiness, then a sense of veiled hope at least.

It would've given her journey some narrative purpose yet without underestimating her mental illness.

I don't think so. It is like trying to explain to me the appeal of these endless expensive movies with nothing but cgi effects, huge explosions, bad acting and weaker plots. I know they make a ton of money (except when they fail miserably) but I will never understand the appeal. But thankfully their are movies like this one for me and the vroom vroom bang bang boom movies for others and everything in between. Live and let live.

This is one of my very favorite US movies this year.

"It's the Viking era."
"That explains the Laser Raptor."

i thought it was rather good.

i don't really understand how you think it was pointless. there are movies out there that i have enjoyed a lot that i might describe as pointless, but this really wasn't one of them. i think there's a fair amount of subtext going on.

I just gave it a 10/10. I was fascinated the entire time and loved every minute of it. I understand everyone does not feel that way, but that's cool too.

This thread is pointless, why am I even replying. Damn.
