I know he has this personal philosophy about awards shows being ego-filled and self-congratulatory. But (IMO) his stance is misguided and pretentious. For starters, to me, it comes across as if he feels he's above all of that....and all the artists who DO choose to attend are, by implication, a bunch of shallow narcissists. That is not only pretentious and condescending, but also very myopic and insulting. In fact, it's that point of view that IS narcissistic...because it suggests that the only reason one would attend is to celebrate ones self.
How about taking the opportunity to celebrate your peers? To celebrate great works of art and artistic expression? How about taking the opportunity to acknowledge and thank those who have helped you and supported you along the way...(many of whom have done it behind the scenes).
Accepting an award is only as self-congratulatory as you choose to make it. It can ALSO be an act of humble graciousness--of gratitude. Accepting a gift is as much an act of grace toward the giver as it is for the recipient.
I think it's a crass and misguided lack of humility, and an insult to others, to blow off every invitation and opportunity to celebrate the arts with ones peers....and is quite a bit MORE pretentious than those who DO choose to go. Hey Woody...the award isn't just about YOU, it's about those who helped you do what you love. It gives YOU the opportunity to thank...THEM. Your judgement is hypocritical and questionable. But of course...we already knew this about you.
