This Movie is Awful

Why would Lifetime show a movie like this. Teenagers watch this.

Its to show that kids and adults die from this. I would have every teen I know watch this!

Their mothers probably watch more, which is good. I just saw the "Don't worry, Mom, I won't go on that site again" scene and that girl was very convincing--I would have believed her.

Teen girls already know about Ana sites, so if anyone's picking up tips from this movie, it's parents.

I think its more of an eye-opener for parents as some other users have said, but I get where you're coming from. When I was in high-school, I was already struggling with my weight, but I had no idea about pro-ana and pro-mia sites until I had watched a documentary about it on PBS. After finding a few forums, I went off the deep end and used the websites to keep me going. I'm not saying that watching this will make anyone consider turning towards anorexia and bulimia, but I think teens and parents should watch this together so they can talk about it afterwords. Eating disorders are no joke.

They show movies like this to serve as a warning to parents, and to help them look for the potential signs in their kids. I suspect that DARE is losing it's strength, and so people/parents/society are looking for new ways to get through to parents and kids.

At any rate, the movie itself isn't bad. The girl is certainly good, the frustration and mood swings are accurately portrayed. However, the woman playing the mother is just god-awful! I can't stand her. Not realistic at all. She reminds me completely of Shelly Duval in The Shining. The same, weak, whininess, which worked in The Shining, but fails miserably in this movie! Horribly cast! I am also disappointed in the actor playing the father. He was wonderful as Peter in Judging Amy, but in this, I can't tell if he's just bad, or if the apathy shown in his character is how the character is supposed to be, or if he's just failing in his acting in this movie. Either way, it's angering me, the way he just seems not to care. So, I'm going to guess that that's just how the character of the father is supposed to be.

Anyway, this movie shows the dysfunction of this family brilliantly. The son is the only normal person in the family. What's really sad is that the daughter needs professional help, but they can't give it to her because they can't afford it, and insurance refuses to cover it.

This movie is either going to end with her getting help, or dying. Right now, I'm predicting that she's going to die. The father is in denial, the mother is just weak, and the son is a kid himself (chronologically), and can't do anything. Very good movie, so far (with the exception of having to watch the actress playing the mother).

Edited to add: I just watched the wrestling and hospital scene with the son. Wow, I missed that one. I wasn't expecting him to be the one to die.

The father is a "man's man". He doesn't know how to relate to women and is totally wrapped up in (living through) his son's achievements. He loves her in the abstract but she is a stranger to him. The problem I had with the mother is that I was under the impression mothers of anorexics tend to be control freaks and that is half the problem of the disease. She should have been more controlling. As for the girl, well...she could have lost a few pounds for the role (j/k!). I thought she was excellent. I think this is the best Lifetime movie ever. Surprisingly edgy too (at least for Lifetime). Even the music was interesting. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

It had an awful plot, awful acting (especially by the dad) and a ridiculous plot twist.

The 90's A Secret Between Friends (also Lifetime) was better than this.

That plot twist was one people should have seen coming a million miles a way, as soon as they introduced that the brother was a wrestler it was obvious.

this movie was pretty bad....it was like the tim burton style of eating disorder movies

reply

That is a great way to define this crazy movie! I'm going to go watch Kate's Secret on YouTube now to cleanse my brain from this bad movie.

The movie was horrible, as soon as the son collapsed my mind went back to the night before when he was hungry and the father literally wrestled the food away from him. You could tell the son had given up but NO ONE blamed his father. The dad was 100 percent responsible for killing his son by denying him food! Made me so angry...

Dont blast me for grammar errors its hard posting on the phone

How many teens watch Lifetime? I'm not that far removed from my teen years, me and my friends wouldn't watch a lifetime original movie. The only way I think a teen would watch this is if they were already dealing with an eating disorder and needed something to help keep them going on the disease.

Unfortunately, tons of girls use this movie as a "trigger". If you don't believe me, go to the YouTube page where this movie is shown. It's sickening (I suffered from anorexia, and have a lifelong spinal disease caused by the bone loss...it's excruciating). It seems that this movie has backfired horribly in it's attempt to bring this message to light and prevent girls from this behavior. So many girls say that they watch it over and over to trigger them....so, having had conversations with them, I have to agree....this movie has been banned in certain countries, and I'm pretty sure this is the reason, though I am not in favor of banning anything in general. I just wish it wasn't so readily available for those who use it for that extra push...
