Why don't they make a film about the actual incident?

I was interested in this until i found out it was some silly Blair witch type thing that didn't even tell the story of the events.

honestly why did they even bother?

I agree, and what's annoying there is so much to the actual case that it could easily made into a movie. Maybe they thought your average Joe couldn't care less about the real story.

One day I hope someone does have the balls to make a proper movie about it because it is a truly fascinating case.

what is this based on?

Well, a film about the actual events that are reliably witnessed/documented would be nothing more than people running about in a forest with a few ill-defined lights. For it to be an interesting film, you'd have to fold in a whole lot of dubious testimony from dubious people. This is not the place to go into details (see elsewhere on the net) but most of the more sensational aspects of this case have been changed/revised/added to over time by the people who claimed to have witnessed them. And, as usual with this field of research, most of the people writing the books are very poor "researchers" using nth-hand sources and leaving material (accurate or not) out, or putting it in, as befits their personal pet theories.

But surely some things like where the men are walking through the forest and they talk about an "eye winkin at ya" are some of the more believable parts of the whole story?

Walking on water is like finding a non fake female profile on a dating site...a miracle!

Agreed, plenty to the actual events described by the guys involved

Whatever you think of it, there's no lack of things to feature

You can even have a true story type thing at the end a bit like the Texts Chainsaw Massacre

Having seen this shockingly bad movie I completely agree with the OP. The true-life events deserve a proper film made about it. I can only hope that because this BS film came out it's publicised the incidents more and some better writers/directors will have noticed, researched it and be making a film about it soon!

It reminded me also of another awful dropping of the ball - The Dyatlov Pass Incident AKA Devil's Pass. THAT STORY IS CRYING OUT FOR A PROPER FILM. Unfortunately we got a cheap film halfway up a mountain with a ridiculous sci fi conclusion which was just plain weird. A creepy film focusing on the 1950s actual events of the massacre of those poor Russian backpackers would be effortlessly horrific. Especially if it's a creature feature and not a crow-barred-in nonsensical sci fi element...
