The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Good bits: The naturalistic acting is making this movie a bit more 'believable'.
Interviewing real people at the start of the movie was a good idea even if it did nothing to do with the cult nor the way we perceive it.
Michael was well played even tho this character is very stale. The locations also looks like a legit cabin in the woods with no electricity. Though a more complete journalistic approach of the compound would have pulled us more into their lifestyle.
The Bad bits:The acting of the younger kids.Oh god they were TERRIBLE! That little runt was fake coughing and had a hard time not laughing.
Apart for 1 or 2 identifiable women, the rest of the group didn't seem to have proper identities ( I know that o they are suppose to be brainwashed, you're still supposed to have some sort of identifying factor for each character).
The 'plan' to get that little kid out of this is quite weak and, I'm sorry, stupid. The dude who left just had to punch the leader and the few other women and just leave with the kid.. anyhow.
The Ugly bits:The ending.. why WHY? Why did the director/writer chose this particular avenue I don't know. But choosing to validate all the *beep* the cult leader spews... that's just..so weak. There should have been an ambiance of ambiguity about this character. Not just a loony smiley pale man with a god complex.
Their 'prophecy' was so badly exploited. We were already at phase II of it and yeah, it wasn't convincing( bear in mind I know it was suppose to be ambiguous, but there were not even a shred of ambiguity about the veracity of that prophecy.) Also its always interesting to learn about the lore of cults, and there, it was just so easily glossed over.
Also what kind of *beep* journalist just goes off with NO WAYS TO COMMUNICATE with their boss or office, but with batteries for days.
All and all it was a very poor 'found footage' movie.I rather watch ' Red State' again.
5/10 would not recommend nor watch again.
