Tired of the cliche

The old ladies are all silly and horny. And, of course, they have to have a weed-smoking scene. Please, not again, not again.

But that's a rule of movies about older people--they're cute and funny and childlike, and do adorable things like getting drunk and stoned. Movies also think it's adorable when elderly people swear and make obscene gestures (June Squibb
spewing foul language and exposing her privates at a gravestone in Nebraska
was supposed to be ever so charming!) Old people having sex is always good for a
laugh, and the kinkier, the better. Old people streaking or otherwise exposing their naked behinds is a plus, too. Because older people are to be chuckled at and patronized, like toddlers.

When things get too serious, the movie elderly often develop dementia, so they
can continue to behave in childlike ways. Any old person in a movie who refuses to play by these rules and takes things too seriously is killed off (natural causes
or, in at least one case, smothered by a pillow). Unfortunately, these movies are made again and again and are often pitched toward older movie audiences as "positive" images of the elderly.

Those who are sick of this kind of thing should seek out the recent movie 5 Flights Up. The story centers on an older couple, but (spoilers) neither dies, neither gets Alzheimer's, neither becomes incapacitated, drunk, stoned, nor gets naked and has awkward sex. They both maintain their dignity and the humor comes from the jerky people around them.

I will echo what the other poster said about "5 Flights UP", good movie.

But to the OP, older ladies really are often like that in real life, especially once they get to the point where they are part of some sort of retirement community. My wife is 63, her 3 sisters are 68 to 71. In their earlier lives they were bankers, teachers, real estate professionals, your basic out-of-the-home career ladies.

You should see them all together now, just about like the group of ladies in this movie! In fact I even told her that while we were watching it, pointing out which characters was most like each sister.

I think its nice to see older people have fun. I didn't much like June Squibb's role in Nebraska, but this was a funny and sweet movie I thought. Sure the parts you mentioned are cliche, but I don't think they overdid it.

Being an old person myself, I wish them all nothing but fun. Certainly silly, overtly horny old ladies who smoke weed and dance around to old pop tunes exist. However, it's become a tiresome movie and tv cliche. Maybe writers should try to come up with something else.

I saw "5 Flights Up" recently and liked it; at least it avoided most of the long list of elderly cliches. There should be more like this, but it's always easier to write the cliches.
