best horror film of the 2010-2019's

there were some other good ones for sure, like get out, midsommar, hereditary, the witch (or vvitch?), babadook, sinister, I also liked that dark skies movie about the aliens. but this one is so simple yet effective. i think it is the best horror film of the last decade. although get out has the better acting and script, it follows has the better premise and much better atmosphere. it is a horror classic.

Definitely and I have seen most of the movies (and loved them) that you listed. What made this film brilliant was its subtleness and not trying hard to explain everything. As much as part of me would love for more movies, I fear that sequels would just be big budget nonsense trying to appeal to a wider audience. One of those movies you can watch over and over..

I would put this film in my top 10 if not top 5 best horror films ever.

Based on your selection, I would also recommend the sci-fi films Coherence, and Time Lapse. While not horror, they were made in the same decade and have that "less is more" approach and just really leave you with a disturbed feeling of dread.

I think Hereditary is the best of that era, but I love It Follows. I think it helped usher in more artistic horror movies, rather than the endless sequels and remakes of slasher type movies that came before.

reply

Totally disagree. It Follows is vastly overrated and there are a lot of much better horror films from those years.

According to you.

Yes, and I am always right.

Top 10-15...but I don't think it's the best.

I'd definitely rank Hereditary and Babadook over this.

(I don't really regard Vvitch and Midsommar as horror films).

Sinister is one of the better of its kind, but I don't really put it on the level of these films.

lol, I really think Get Out is so utterly overrated. It's not bad, but I never thought of it as anything other than okay. I enjoyed Us far more.

reply

Not evne close. Ouija: Origin of Evil is better.

reply

My top 5 would probably be;

Evil Dead
It Follows
Sinister
Black Swan
Annihilation

reply

I've seen Black Swan but never considered it horror. Did you put it in that category because of the fantasy elements in it?

reply

It's one of those films that's semi-Horror. From memory it does feature one or two jump scares, some semi-body horror (transforming into the Swan) and it's general vibe is quite intense.

It's listed as a Horror film by Wikipedia and Letterboxd. Whilst on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes it's simply a 'thriller'. It's one of those films I go back-and-forth on, I can see both sides of the argument but I tend to trend towards including it, among other films. I take a loose approach to Horror branding.

I mean, people consider films like Cabin in the Woods & Shaun of the Dead as Horror. Not to mention a plethora of 80s Horror-Comedies, The Universal Monster Movies...so many historic Horror films are less intense than Black Swan. I mean Black Swan is more of a Horror film by modern standards than films like Bride of Frankenstein.

The Lighthouse and The Silence of the Lambs are two others which sit alongside Black Swan in the is it or isn't it Horror branch.

reply

I'd qualify it as psychological horror, personally.

reply

If we're including Black Swan as horror, then it's far and away the best of the decade.

reply

It's among my favorites, along with some others you mentioned. Midsommar, It Follows, Dark Skies, and the first It film are the four best horror films I can remember seeing in the past 10 years or so.
