This is NOT a cult-classic

It's a CLASSIC! Deserves to be up there with Psycho and Halloween

reply

Yes, it does, but it's not an asian movie or a Nolan movie, so the rating must be lower.

Sadly

What's wrong with Nolan movies and what does that have to do with this?

How Nolan's movies are rated really high, no matter what the quality is.

Now, don't get me wrong, I like Nolan's movies. I enjoyed Interstellar but I don't think it deserves that huge rating it has there.

reply

Ah, the overrated complaint. I don't believe in over/underrated. They are rated based on how people liked them. Just because you don't agree with the rating, doesn't mean it's overrated.

Personally, I've loved every Nolan movie, except Dark Knight Rises, which I thought was just ok and Following, (which was kind of hard to watch). And I'm not just following the hype. I didn't even know who he was until I saw Memento and that immediately became my favorite movie. Prestige, Insomnia, Inception, Interstellar, I thought they were all incredible! And I love what he did with the first two batman movies.

But if all of those had an average 6 rating, I wouldn't say they were underrated, I would just be surprised that they weren't well received. It wouldn't mean that all or most of the people who didn't like it were lying.

Btw, I rated It Follows a 10, I loved every second of this movie. Then when my sister asked if her and her husband would like it. I said, "...you might, your husband won't". And I was spot on about that, haha

That's not to disparage him or his tastes, that just understanding what people like. This movie was never going to appeal to the masses. Which is where the Cult-classis title comes in. Personally, I think cult-classic is an honor. If I made movies, I'd love one of them to be considered a cult-classic.

I agree, except that I really liked but didn't love TDKR. Nolan is unfairly judged(By some) because people feel his work is in general, Over-rated. I don't subscribe to that notion either. He just blends Cerebral Storytelling and Blockbuster Filmmaking and he's really good at it. There are only about a handful of directors I'd wanna see $100mil in their hands... Nolan, Fincher, Villenueve, Spielberg and Scorsese. They have the ability to not necessarily compromise their vision, even when making these big films. Spielberg gets a ton of heat but I'll defend him til the day I die. He was the enemy because he combined Classic Filmmaking with Blockbuster Material... And its not his fault. JAWS did $400mil or whatever it was for a reason, it was a MASTERPIECE. Then he does Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, ET(And Poltergeist in the same effing year!), add in the next Indy films, then he does Jurassic Park and SCHINDLER'S LIST... The list goes on. Nolan is in that mold. Inception is perfection. TDK, Interstellar was a bit of a let down but still a fantastic film and I'm sure Dunkirk will be too. Plus, he's PRACTICAL. What's not to love? I love 'It Follows' but this Nolan hate is relentless. I see it on everything.

reply

Exactly! And people these days seem to have a hard time separating opinion from fact. There's so much entitlement in our society that people think their opinion of something is concrete and everyone else should follow suit otherwise they are over/under rating something.

And the comparisons people make usually don't make any sense. It Follows has nothing to do with Nolan movies. Why even compare them? They are completely separate experiences.

Yea, it is ridiculous to lump them together... Completely different entities

Classics aren't built over night. A film becomes a classic when people remember a movie and then continue to return to it long after it was released. While I certainly think this movie will stand out as a highlight of this era of horror film, I think we all just have to wait and see as to whether it becomes the classic we believe it will become.

reply

One can only hope that we aren't subjected to "It Follows . . Again!" "It Follows 3: Quit Following Me" "Damn; It's Still Following" etc, after which people will inevitably think back more fondly on the original. This is one horror movie that does not need any sequels.

After hearing all the endless adulation this received, I couldn't believe how hokey and implausible this movie was. This is what people think good cinema is?

reply

Well, yeah. I do think it's really good cinema. I just don't think it needs a sequel. We must understand the word "hokey" quite differently, and most horror is implausible to some extent. This one didn't reach the point of "Oh, come ON now!"

I won't bore you with my long-form review -- there are plenty of well-written professional reviews available if you want to know why people liked it -- but I'll tell you how I knew the movie had me:

I went by myself to see this one, sitting down in the bottom seats of the top section, meaning people who went in or out might have to walk in front of me to get to an exit. I was probably an hour into the movie, when some guy got up to do whatever, and my immediate tense reaction was "Wait . . does anyone else see that guy?"

Stupid, I know, and I got a good chuckle out of it . . but that was enough for me to know the movie was working. I feel like it will be well thought of for a long time.

Yes.

Its at least one of the better horror movies to come out this decade.

reply

Completely agree with you. It has a very nostalgic sense to it like Stranger Things which is why this movie should be considered a classic.

reply

Completely disagree but there has not been a good horror movie (in any of it's sub-genre's) to be considered makings of a "classic" in a long, long time.

I've baited my hook with my own underwear. Is it wrong that I hope to catch a fish I can relate to?-Ragdoll.

That's just 'back in the good old days' nostalgic wankery.

If you took half the classics from yesteryear and released them today, they'd get torn to shreds. They're protected and celebrated for their influence not their quality as a film. The Evil Dead (1981) would never attain a 7.4 on IMDB or become a classic had it been released as is, in the last few years. People would consider it a cheap and hokey little flick. Whilst I can guarantee you that Evil Dead (2013) had it been released back in 1981 would have been a major hit. It would be one of the most celebrated horror films ever. People wouldn't have known what hit them.

Such is the evolution of cinema.

Some people have a real love affair with the 70s and 80s. The same reasoning for why people prefer films like The Thing (1982), Halloween (1978), The Shining (1980) etc over horror films from the 1920s-1960s is the same reason they'll eventually get ousted by more recent releases. It's already happening, some younger movie fans consider those films dated, boring and not scary.

On the topic of It Follows, if it was released largely as is back in say 1978. It would be a titan in the horror pantheon. Many of the people critizing it would instead be celebrating it as a true bonafide classic.

In my opinion it is. It stands up to repeated viewings and I'll be watching it again. There's been a lot of 'horror' churned out recently that really doesn't cut it.
