Ending

In the end scene we see a person walking slowly behind Jay and Paul, so that is IT and Paul has the curse? Can someone explain?

reply

Well, he did have sex with Jay at the end and the movie leaves it ambiguous if it's still following them or not, but it leans more towards "it's still following them".

Personally I think its gone from the ending for those 2. I think its a movie about sex for pleasure instead of a emotional connection.

All of the sexual encounters were purely physically oriented with no love/connection. But when the 2 childhood friends have sex, you can tell the tension, nervousness and feelings they have for each other emotionally. So they broke the curse.

In my opinion, if you look close at the end, the person followong them is walking faster than any other point of movie with the cursed monster thingy. So that's the clue for me.

Thank you for this explanation. This makes so much sense. I thought the ending was to be left ambiguous, which I guess it could be. However, this was the only time Jay seemed happy with no fear, so your explanation fits. It actually explains a lot, like how Hugh/Jeff told them that "It" was still following him even though he gave it to Jay and he could still see "It" when Jay was in the wheelchair. There was no love therefore he couldn't rid himself of it.

It is purposely ambiguous. You're not suppose to know if that is IT or if that's a regular guy. They seemed to have killed IT in the swimming pool and maybe passed on the curse to a prostitute just incase. But you don't know if it is truly dead & gone, just like the characters don't really know. They'll always have to look over their shoulder just incase its still out there, but at least they won't have to face IT alone. If it comes back they will fight it together.

It also appears that the person walking behind Jay & Paul is wearing the exact same clothing as Paul

reply

I have no idea, but I guess so although now that Paul has the curse, it will go after him, not Jay but if 'it' kills Paul then 'it' will then go after Jay

reply

I think it's implied they'll have sex so, it will sometimes go after Paul and sometimes after Jay.

reply

It won't go onto Jay though, well I don't think anyways because as long as Paul is still alive, 'it' will be after Paul not Jay. When Jay passed the curse onto Greg, he apparently never saw 'it' until we all see that 'it' look the form of his mother. We also saw before Greg being killed by 'it', 'it' saw that Jay was there on the other side of the corridor, but 'it' doesn't do anything though

reply

No, I meant, they'll continue to have sex so the monster will be in a loop or something. They have sex, it follows Jay, they have sex a few weeks later, it follows Paul, then they have sex again some time later...

reply

I'm not really sure if it works like that, but then again if it does work then sooner or later 'it' might get really confused or at least annoyed and if that does happen then Jay & Paul might be safe from 'it'.

reply

I think "it" is still alive, but that doesn't mean that it's coming after them. People who have had sex with someone infected can still see it; Jay and Hugh both saw "it" when they weren't first in line. The ambiguity comes from whether or not Paul had sex with the prostitute.

reply

There's no ominous lingering shoot of said person, so I'd say no.
It is still out there, though, corroborated by the author.
