Considering it's always supposed to be walking toward you, it's a bit strange that it was just standing there staring like it was posing for a spooky horror movie shot.
shareIt isn't stated anywhere in the movie that it can walk without stopping.
shareThe precedent it sets in the movie is that the thing just constantly walks towards its target. That's even what's said about it. Anytime it's needed to get into a building that has locked doors it smashes out a window and keeps moving. It had no reason to climb onto the top of the house when its target was inside the house and we've already seen it smash out windows to get indoors when it had to. The only explanation for that shot is that they wanted it to look spooky.
shareIt's stated that it will follow her and that it's smart. It's shown to be stopping to think about the situation etc., so, it definitely stops at points.
Besides, the door in her bedroom was blocked by a chair, it probably decided to go via roof. She escaped through that window before.
It couldn't get to her by going through the house as easily.
