Why Is M-Chuck the Only Family Member Who Speaks w/ a Boston Accent?

If the whole family was born and raised in Boston, shouldn't they all have at least a hint of the Boston accent that is sooo distingushable? Currently, Mary Charles (M-Chuck) is the only one who noticably speaks with the accent. What gives?

I can't stand Boston accents, so I'm glad that she's the only one with one. I actually didn't notice until you said something.

A bit of the old ultraviolence...

I was born and raised in Texas and I don't sound country so I'm sure it goes for other parts of the country too.

mmooves, I get what you're saying, but how far removed are you from Texas? Except for Cam and Reggie who went to college, none of the other family members lived anywhere else but Boston. In fact, the series premiere began with Cassie selling years and years of Boston-accumulated stuff as they prepared to move from Boston for the 1st time (going to Atlanta). So, where is Cassie's accent, or Julius' (before his demise)? Just M-Chuck speaks that way, huh? As Arsenio Hall use to say..."Things that make you go, hmmmmm".

On Ray Donovan the characters are from Boston and the actors do fake Boston accents, and people from Boston are always complaining about how bad the actors fake accents are. TV shows have two choices, they can either have the actors do fake accents and risk the accents sounding obviously fake, or have the actors speak in their regular accents and have people complain about how unrealistic it is for the characters to not have accents. Neither is ideal.

I agree and if I'm not mistaken the accent just recently popped up!!

There are two reasons:

1) Erica Ash - the actress who plays Mary Charles - has likely done improv and appeared on MadTV doing different characters. She is the only actor on the show who can do accents, and opted to do one. Maybe none of the other characters can pull off the accents.

2) Mary Charles - the character - may have gone to Catholic school and thus picked up the accent. Her mother and uncle went to the public school in the black neighborhood and thus kept their black accents. Cam went to college and has attempted to sound educated so he was able to lose the accent.

In this case look at the progression of the characters:

*Casse (the mother) sounds black and generally uses grammar that suggests lower class or education. Julius also sounded African-American/black and spoke with grammar that suggested lower education.
*Mary Charles has integrated more into American/white Boston society and has the Boston accent. She still swears and uses grammar that would be seen as lower middle class Boston.
*Reggie (the cousin) has a bit of an African-American/black accent but his grammar suggests education. This is the same of Cam. They sound middle class African American.
*Missy - Reggie's wife - went to college and grew up at least upper middle class and sounds like it. She has little to no accent and if you heard her on the phone you might not know if she was white or black.
