So what are the rules? (spoilers but they won't make any damn sense)

So I started watching this on Netflix. It's okay in terms of acting and production but I have some questions for anyone who knows.

Is there any reason given for who returned from the dead and who didn't? A bus full of kids drives off a cliff and only one of them comes back. A kid and his mom are both murdered but only he returns.

Also, The Returned characters don't age and don't have to sleep and cannot get drunk, but they have to eat and breathe and they can be injured or (re)killed, albeit temporarily. They also don't have any scars from the injuries that killed them. But they can also telepathically control people and radios and one of them kills a healthy young man by sexing him up. At the end of the series a Returned character even stops time. Wassup wit dat? I grew up reading comic books, and although they are crazy and dumb, there is usually an internal logic at work. For example, Spider-Man was bitten by a radioactive spider, which gave him his powers. This show offers no explanations and even the powers of The Returned are inconsistent. It's annoying when there are no rules. Please correct me if I'm wrong and there are rules.

The Sandrine Holt (half-Asian lesbian) character. If she was stabbed by Mr. Crazypants Killer, did she die? Is she a Returned too? If so, why does she have scars? If she isn't a Returned, how did she survive (she didn't go to the hospital because the cops made no mention of a woman surviving the killer)? The scuzzy bartender woman who was also stabbed by the same killer and died at the hospital but Returned suggests that The Returned were dead bodies brought back to life. But if that is the case, then why didn't Camille and Simon wake up in her coffins?

Shows like this that introduce a central mystery and don't even try to answer it drive me nuts. Even if they did answer these questions, I'd still roll my eyes.

It seemed to me that everyone who came back had a death that was related to/caused by Victor. Victor was in front of the bus, and that made the driver swerve and go over the cliff, and Camille kinda caused that as well as him. Peter died because he robbed Victor's house with his friend, and then his friend shot him when they were hiding. They said that Simon killed himself by jumping in front of a car, but that seemed really out of character, and I assumed that later on in the series they would reveal that Victor was in the middle of the road or something and Simon was trying to save him. I'm not really sure about Helen, Lucy, and Adam (the murderer guy); Helen said that she knew Victor before she died, so maybe that's it. And Tony killed Adam after he tried to kill Julie, and that can't be a coincidence. Lucy wouldn't have died if Adam hadn't come back. I'm not really sure why Victor would return though.

I can't really explain anything about the not sleeping or getting drunk thing. Simon didn't stop time in the end, he had a vision of the future. I don't think that was because he was one of the ones that came back; Lucy was told by the people who died in the first flood that they had been sending signs that something was going to happen, and I feel like that was just another one of the signs. I have a theory that each/some of the returned has a power related to their life before/how they died; Lucy lied about being able to talk to dead people, but now she can. I'm not 100% about Camille, she is/was a twin, and she could sense Lena and all that, and maybe her returning amplified that somehow? Not sure how that would explain the guy she killed. That might've just been a bad mushroom trip for all we know. We don't really know a lot about the pasts of the others, so I'm not really sure about them.

Because Julie has the scars, she didn't die. If I remember correctly, at some point she asks Victor if she's "like him". After Adam stabbed her, Tony stopped him, and he wasn't able to finish killing her. I'm assuming Tony either anonymously called 911 to come help her, or someone found her. It seems like a lot of people go through the tunnel (Adam did manage to find like 8 women walking through the tunnel and killed them).

From my understanding, the returned "wake up" where they died (Adam woke up in the woods, Camille woke up where the bus crashed) and Lucy died in the hospital bed, and returned like a minute later, right where she died. Then again, when Simon died the second time, he returned in the morgue, so that doesn't really fit. Maybe it's different when they die again?

I feel like, had the show been given another season, they would've explained all of that more. It is the U.S. version of a French show, so if you want to see if they answer your questions in that one then maybe watch that? I think that one is on season 2 or 3. Apparently that storyline for the first season is almost exactly the same, but I've heard the quality is better. There's also a movie that the series is based off of called They Came back.

I haven't watched or read about the earlier French versions so this might be obvious in those versions.

I noticed that when each of the Returned come back, the desire they had just before they died becomes an obsession; almost like they are actual zombies but instead of wanting to eat people they need to fulfill their obsession. Also like zombies the Returned don't sleep and have a constant hunger

Victor/Henry - find his fairy
Simon - have a family with Rowan
Camille - have sex with Ben / be accepted
Peter - make things right (support group and runs the shelter)
Adam - gut animals and people, even biting where their guts are like a zombie (and wants to have a mother figure?)
Lucy - speak with the dead
Helen - purge the town, she previously blew up City Hall

I've watched both seasons of the French version and this is what I gathered from these characters:

Victor/Henry - find his fairy----wanted to warn people and wants Julie as a mother
Simon - have a family with Rowan---agree
Camille - have sex with Ben / be accepted---wants to do the "older" things her twin gets to do and is trying to 'make up for lost time'
Peter - make things right (support group and runs the shelter---at first, I think he felt a lot of guilt for the things he had done "35 years ago" but then later, it seemed like he wanted to destroy all of the Returned
Adam - gut animals and people, even biting where their guts are like a zombie (and wants to have a mother figure?)---he seemed to really care for Lena and maybe was going to stop stabbing women, and didn't want to be with the other Returned
Lucy - speak with the dead---at first she seems like the cult leader then she seems concerned that Victor/Louis is the leader then changes her mind to want Simon & Adele's baby be "the one"
Helen - purge the town, she previously blew up City Hall
