Do I need to finish season two?

So, I liked this show from the beginning, but it didn't really turn to love until the second half of season one.
Likewise, the first half of season two I was lukewarm about, but started to dig once I saw "There Is Not Currently a Problem." Unfortunately, FX pulled episodes from the season right after that and I never watched the last five episodes of that season, which sucks because I hear "LCD Soundsystem" was something else.

Given the critics loved this show all season long, and it took me half of it to get into it, I'm not entirely eager to pay $25 for the DVD on a few episodes, that in the end, I may only like.

However, I was just on the FX site and noticed that it has all 13 episodes of season three leaving in 30 days.

So, I'm wondering if I should just jump into that season or wait until the price on the DVDs goes down. Are those last few episodes of season two needed to keep up with the third season?

There was a point where I thought season two changed it's focus too much...but it turned out to actually work in it's favor and create some unexpectedly poignant scenes and add some layers of depth to this show. In the end, it may have become the best season so far.

There are some running gags and storylines that somewhat carry over through season 3, so it would be best to watch it all in order. But it's not absolutely necessary, if you don't mind perhaps losing the full impact when you go back and eventually watch stuff out of order.

There are places I could point you to, to watch it free online, but you will have to know how to battle excessive pop-ups and ads etc...

Cool. I think I'll jump right into season three since I don't have that much time to catch up with season two and watch all of season three before FX takes down the episodes.

Finished the third season and I am amazed by what they were able to do. You were right; there were some running gags that I think I missed (the DVD rental box which sits in the back of Jimmy's apartment for example), but other than that, it was a real enjoyable season. Excited to see where they take it in year four.
