Who was the 'audience' supposed to be for this show?

Who was/is supposed to watch this?

Rap fans - Were they asking for this?
Gay people - Were they?
People who hate rap? - WHy would they watch it? To validate their beliefs?
People who hate gays? - See above.

This show seems to be the worst case of groupthink since Cop Rock. I mean what kind of meeting (or series of meetings) would include so many tone deaf people that they would consider this show to be A) Necessary B) Entertaining

It was almost unwatchable and it was mostly laugh free.
I see this one going the way of Unsupervised , another FX animated clunker.

Ahh ya me! Right here I am right here! All I've ever wanted was a show were the main character was gay and not nessarly a stereotypely gay and the entire story didn't revolve around it, he simply is. I've got my wish !

For me I found mostly if not all of the jokes funny as well as the puns. My only thing is I'm not a fan of rap music. And the voice actor--so the charecter is ( I'm just guessing) some kind of Hispanic yet the voice actor sounds like some "ethnic sounding" inner city white guy. Don't add up to me .

reply

Chozen is "some kind of Hispanic?"
He seemed very- for lack of better words- Jew-y. He had a major jewfro in the flashback- but his sister could be irish so..........

reply

Cop Rock was awesome. So was Fish Police. So STFU yo!

In what world do YOU live in? Entertainment is based upon commonly used and recognized tropes. When those tropes are discarded or they don't match the existing products on the market, they almost always fail. When they succeed, they change the medium and thus, the game.

That's TV 101.

A show with tired jokes about:

1) Prison rape
2) Homosexuality
3) White rappers
4) Rap in general
5) Black rappers

That also includes some of the weakest and most inane rap music ever might be "original" to you. But that simply means that you lead a sheltered existence.

Prediction: Given the fact that F/X has severely curtailed the number of ads they are doing for this program states even more plainly than I can that they realize this show is a bomb. It's going to last a single season and then quickly and quietly be forgotten by all involved.

Actually, I'm "about" funny shows being just that: Funny.
When or if they are not, whatever their subject matter, then the writers have failed.
That Funny 101.

And if rap itself wasn't being disparaged, then why even make the character a gay White rapper? Why not a straight White rapper? Or a female rapper? Or an old musician going into rap when his career was flagging? The possibilities are limitless.

Instead, as I stated initially, the writers found one story element (rap being performed by a gay White rapper) that would be difficult to mine for humor without coming across as either racist or homophobic. And they failed to locate much humorous ore in that particular "gold mine."

This show is going to fail because it is a case of groupthink meeting people with the money to fund it. AND..because for a comedy series, it just isn't very …comedic.

Here's an idea.

How about a lead character being a black man? Gay, atheist black rapper?

Oh, no that's just too controversial to have a black man be the lead character.

2014... still fighting to get the lead roles even in a damned animation...

"You think that every single day of my life I dont want to do coke? But I cant! I have PTA tomorrow"

I'm torn on how this one works. Does everyone deserve more spotlight in media? Yeah, it's way too white and written by the same weird circles. If black people get shows they are on a niche network, usually, and not aimed at "America", only "Black America"

But would Chozen really be a black character if they changed his skin color? I am not sure on this, but I guess to average America the answer is yes...

Cleveland Brown was created by a white man, voiced by a white man, and the show was written by white people... yet apparently white america didn't respond too well, as the show tanked while the other two, similar shows are still hits. The implication definitely feels like it's because of a CARTOON skin color.

Unfortunately that is quite likely one reason why Chozen isn't black. You could at least say that a black and hispanic man are on every episode, which can't be said for much other television. The other one, though, is that we're supposed to be see him as a bit of a clown, and rap is still stereotyped to belong to black culture. Thus his role there is more marginalized, so it goes both ways.

Will we see black characters accepted as leads any time soon? It's definitely hard to say, but it would be interesting to see Fx(x?) take that "risk" and try it out.

Maybe the show was pitched as a gay black man, and a frightened network executive said that was too far and they had to drop one, and the jokes require his homosexuality a lot more than his race (which would actually barely change the plot at all)

The only asumption I believe that comes close is the " group of people who have the money to fund this". Isn't that how the majority of things happen in he entertainment industry. I think they know that this show is not for everybody, however some will love if. I am happy that a show like this came on air and I am wishing for many of seasons--who really knows but you seem dead set on wishing this was dead and never aired. Your real agenda is clear.

reply

"My agenda?"
Really?

I thought that the "agenda" (if there was any) was a funny animated program.
I guess that I was wrong.

He doesn't like this trash, so that means he has an agenda? How convenient for you.

reply

Don't know or care, but I like it

reply

Who is Archer aimed at?
Spies? Incompetent employees? Those are the two mains themes or the show, and I am pretty sure that very, very few of the former watch and few people that are the latter watch because of that.

We don't actually have to identify with the theme of the show to enjoy it, or else most people would only watch "Boring Suburban Family".

Now, whether or not you find it funny is another matter, but a show doesn't have to be about the audience for them to like it.
