Thoughts on cancellation

I liked the pilot and believed it showed a lot of promise, sadly it didn't do much to build on that. It always left something to be desired in my opinion. There were a lot of fair criticisms on the show and it's competition on Thursday nights didn't help. I think one of the big downfalls was the supporting cast, Stew had some funny moments but ultimately he didn't add enough to make me want more scenes with him. He was essentially cast in a Barney Stinson type role but wasn't able to what he needed to make himself a character who we warned to see more of. Stephie in my opinion was a train wreck, I didn't enjoy any scenes she was in to the point where I cringed sometimes when she was on camera. I was really disappointed that Rashida Jones didn't play the role of Stephie which I thought was the plan at first. I feel like she could have brought the a spark and likability that none of the supporting cast has brought so far. It's a shame this show got cancelled but totally understandable why in my opinion.

I didn't like the people at Andy's job at all. Stew and Stephie I could live with, but I could not stand Big Bird. You are right that Rashida Jones would have been much better as Stephie. I totally agree.

I agree, it should have been Rashida Jones. I don't like the actress that plays stephie.maybe its her accent, or her attitude, just something about her I don't like. Or maybe it's cause she was in "back in the game" last year, a show that got canceled that I loved but hated her in it too.

reply

I just hope the show will get a proper marriage.

reply

Really? I'm shocked....i think the supporting cast is hilarious.....and Stephie is supposed to be over the top. Personally I think it's all getting better with each episode

Lenora crichlow had a bbc show...the original "being human" she's quite good

reply

until last week, I was sad about it getting cancelled, but I cannot stand Cristin Milioti ... she is unbearable ...
Ben Feldman and the rest of the cast were awesome though.

100% agreed. She is one of the most talentless actresses I've seen.

reply

yeah, zero charm!

reply

Yeah it's great NBC comedy. I like Cristin Milioti.
First time I saw her was on 30 Rock. I thought that was one of the funniest eps of the show. Really wish they gave this show a couple of seasons. I bet if it was on CBS it wouldn't have been cancelled. I say this because it's funnier than 2 Broke Girls and that show is still going strong for some reason. I watch it because I like Kat Denning but the show is hit or miss every week. A to Z is hilarious every week imo.

It had a really bad time slot. Comedies in general are hard to get a large audience (Big Bang, Modern Family, and HIMYM when it aired are the ones the defy the odds), but Thursday night killed it. Not only that, but its lead in was Bad Judge (had the better time slot), which the only thing Bad Judge had going for it was Kate Walsh. But that would have been better served on ABC where people know Kate Walsh more. A to Z had a bad lead in, it was too late in the night for this comedy, and it was up against Shondaland which gets the ratings on Thursdays.

The time slot of death! Of course, the blame for that lies with the network "suits".

My theory about executives in general, is that wearing your shirt collar buttoned puts pressure on both carotid arteries. Add a necktie, and the chance for blood to get to the brain is greatly reduced.

I think "A to Z" could have done well. There is just something I like about Cristin Milioti.

Maybe it has something to do with her all too short time on HIMYM. Instead of blowing the last season on all that nonsense, we should have seen Ted and Tracy with the kids for some amount of time. Or, if the whole plan from the beginning was to have Ted end up with Robin, they should have skipped the ditsy ending with Tracy barely being there before dying.

reply

I think the problem was the show had competition from scandal which saw a ratings boost this season.

reply

I'm not surprised by this, they were obviously trying to use the HIMYM fan base but the acting wasnt that good. And the Mom from HIMYM just isnt a likeable actress and her character just never jelled with the lead guy who was a bit too needy ala HIMYM.

I feel the opposite. I normally don't like romantic comedies but this was the exception to the rule. The show really built up over time on me.

Stephie was pretty good and an unknown in the part worked well and I might be one of the few who liked the Stu-Stephie chemistry. He's like a cautionary tale to be careful about a one-night stand because they can come back to haunt you.
