I've tried two episodes and it's just awful

1. The "LAUGH" track is the most annoying one I've ever experienced. Painful.

2. Dave Foley is awful. How does he keep getting work? When the first episode aired and he was the first person I saw, I almost stopped watching.

3. Jonathan Slavin is the best part and we barely see him.

4. Ken is good but the writing is hackneyed and cliché.

I just feel so sorry for them.

I've purposely been watching the second season since I heard so many good things about the first season. It doesn't grab my attention and I don't understand why they try so hard to bring in black mannerisms and cliches. I thought this was an Asian family; I didn't know they were Blackasian. I find it off-putting.

The funniest person is the gay assistant. When he's on he lights up the camera. He's comedy GOLD! The rest are blah to me.

This is the shows first season...

reply

I've been hearing about this show for a while. I thought this was the second season. Anyway I tried to watch it. It is not a show for me.

reply

This show isn't funny for many reasons but I am wondering what do you mean about all the Black Mannerism? That is racially uncool as the Mom on the show just said. Just because Dr. Ken misuse words that he calls Urban Slang, please don't put that on an a race that has nothing to do with this train wreck. I know many black people that have never used the words he uses. Call it slang, bad grammar, modern terminology but what Dr. Ken is speaking, that's not a racial
issue.

I probably should have said "urban". I am black and I do know some people that ACT like him (they're being silly; it's not how they are in "real life"). It's for fun; comedy relief.

I see no reason why Dr Ken has embraced it. It seems odd TO ME.

reply

Yes his "Urbanisms" can be annoying but it's something that he apparently really likes and finds funny. It's no different than eddie from Fresh off the Boat and his interest in rap and black culture. Asians from the 80s-90s grew up embracing urban culture because there was nothing else for them to identify with as minorities (yes, Asians and Blacks are both minorities). It's no different than a lot of black folks embracing Bruce Lee and martial arts from the 70s-80s.

Are you sure you're not hating on him because you think "urbanism" is exclusive to your culture only? Because it's not.

reply

No that's not the reason at all. I have sons in their early 30s and they have friends of all races, all walks of life, and all ethnicities and although quite a few of them make "urban" references and enjoy urban music, culture, etc. NONE of them act like that ALL THE TIME. If Dr Ken showed more range I would not have a problem with him. It's because he seems one note that I have a hard time taking him seriously. Why can't he can enjoy urban culture and his culture as well? Neither is mutually exclusive. Oh, and I'm well aware that "Asians and Blacks are both minorities". That statement was very condescending; I don't need you to school me, thanks.

Hope I answered your question.

I know many black people that have never used the words he uses.
I AM a black person and have NEVER used the words he uses; nor the flailing of his hands/arms; nor his mannerisms. However, you can't deny that his urbanisms are mostly rooted in the black community or what is perceived as urbanism in the black community.

They need to do better. If they want the show to be "urban" include EVERYONE that lives in an "urban" environment. There are all races living in urban areas. Why does the show seem to lean toward black people? I'm sure EVERY race that lives in urban America has their own stereotypes like on the George Lopez show, which I liked by the way. Why don't they incorporate ALL the urbanisms?

reply

"Racially uncool"? WTF? As a black viewer, I found it hilarious--the few times I've watched the show, that is. End of story.

reply

There's barely like 5 episodes

I just tried my first episode yesterday and it's pretty bad. The white characters who had the party away from Ken's family were just AWFUL. There were a couple slightly funny moments with the Jeong family but the show needs new writers.

Jesus NEVER existed! He is Judeo Christian MYTH!

reply

I agree I wanted to like this it is so bad.

reply

It really is. I started watching because I heard it was hysterically funny. I don't get it and find it far from funny.

reply

It's not the least bit funny and Ken Jeong is the worst.

"Vulgarity is no substitute for wit".

reply

I don't understand his rabid fans. The man cannot carry the show. It's really sad to watch. The funniest person on the show is the gay nurse and even he's not funny all the time. Everyone else is just mediocre.

reply

Agreed. I wanted to like it, but it's annoying. I like Ken, love the son, meh on the wife & daughter, like the two nurses, except detest the squeaky nurse. Dave Foley has played essentially the same caricature of himself for a couple decades, now. It was tongue-in-cheek in Hot in Cleveland, but here it's over the top.

And yeah, that awful laugh track.

reply

I was hoping for another Scrubs.

I lasted about 5 minutes. The laugh track alone would have done me in anyway.

reply

Honestly, this show isn't that bad anymore. It's obviously not Seinfeld or I Love Lucy or something of that caliber, far from it, but it's own level, it's evolved a bit, it's not hilarious but I'm not rolling my eyes as much as I was during the pilot. The plots are cliche, but Ken Jeong, Dave Foley, and a couple others make up for it, and promoting the grandpa to regular is a plus, but the kids are still annoying. Overall, I'm not saying it's a good show but it's certainly gone from like a 3 out of 10 to a 5 out of 10, just something mildly amusing to watch if you're bored on a Friday night.

It's like most shows on TV today, too cliched, bossy wife, weak willed husband, a gay character (which there seems to be one on every show that has debuted in the last year), and one smart kid, so, basically every family based series currently on.

reply

You made it further than I did. I didnt even make it to the end of episode 1 this show was so bad and the laugh track just ridiculous. Its amazing that this crapmade it to air.. Id rather rewatch community. I loved ken in community, chang was great.

reply

you should keep watching. yes it was pretty sucky to start with but i say mid season 1 it found it's way and not it's a pretty decent show
