Subtitles

Why did the subtitles almost never match what the person was saying? Not only did the director attempt to clean up the grammar (which is wrong), the director went one step further and often completely changed the meaning of whatever was said. I get it much of the language was in poor English but it's not the director's job to change what is being said to whatever the director feels should have been said.
