What's with the seeting date 1989?

So during one scene we get information what action takes place in 1989. Why it is 1989 or this decade anywhay? Why couldn't they just left present time? If it would be a present time or unidentified time - no one would care. But now they have put this very particular date 1989 and i started to thinking for the rest of the movie (as there wasn't anything particular to think about during this flick) - why 1989? Maybe, i thought, it will end end in a present time jumping from 1989 with this series killer probably still on a loose and it will end on this paper thin idea of his philosophy "you choose, it's not my fault" which still would be more interesting then this flat ending witch we had got. It makes absolutely no sence or purpose that action takes place in 1989. Make it some purpose or leave it.

Where did they show 1989 in the movie???

She was writing her name and birthday for whoever might have found her body. 12/13/89 was her date of birth. Unless they were trying to convince us that Iphones and video chat were around in 1989... but I prefer when horror movies are set in the past. Whats the fun in seeing something set in the time we live in everyday?
