Attacking below the waist in a fight

*Spoilers ahead for those who are not familiar with the plot*

During the contest between the Pandav and the Kaurav princes, when the adult princes are introduced in episode of Nov 22, a duel between Bheem and Duryodhan is shown. Here, both are shown to be attacking below the waist at several points within the duel, when it was against the rules of a mace-fight. I know this amounts to nitpicking, but wasn't it important to be true to what has been given in the epic here, considering that this very rule is violated when Bheem kills Duryodhan in the end by attacking his thighs?

What do you all think of this? I think the makers have not researched the rules of fights and duels well. Or is there another explanation to it?
