Why so many tortoises?

If Mr Hoppy intended to fool Mrs Silver by having the original Alfie 'grow' over a given period of time by swapping the tortoise every few weeks, I'd say ten of them would have done the job. There's no reason whatsoever to crowd the apartment with a hundred plus.
