What is the best movie penned by Dalton Trumbo?

Liked the movie, he was an extremely prolific writer.

What movie best shows of his writing skills?

I like Papillon, but he adapted that from a biographical book.
Johnny Got His Gun is my favourite of his original screenplays.

I really liked Spartacus, that was a wonderful but tragic movie about human rights and the ancient world, and how we better damn well hold on them here in the present or we will be getting crucified by the rich Roman nobles just like they did back then.

Go BERNIE SANDERS !!!

The same posterior orifices called Spartacus a communist and socialist just like they did with Trumbo, but the penalty was more severe.

I'm very fond of 'The Prowler' and 'Gun Crazy' myself.

I haven't seen anywhere close to all of his films, but Lonely are the Brave was a fantastic movie. Trumbo adapted it from a book, which I haven't read, but as a stand alone movie it's really good. I also really liked Spartacus.

After seeing Trumbo, it sort of peaked my interest to take a (quick) look at Spartacus again. I'd seen it back in 1960 when it first came out and was of course at the time bowled over by the movie, what a spectacle it was in those days.

But now, after half a century on, I thought it was mostly very corny and unbelievable dialogue, so predictable and cliché. As far as history goes it was also awfully incorrect - the historical Spartacus had no intention or even a concept of abolishing slavery.

So just saying if this was supposed to be Dalton Trumbo's crowning masterpiece, it sure hasn't held up well after all these years.

Spartacus is also an adaptation of a novel, so if the story bothers you, take it up with Howard Fast (who was a Communist).

You can adapt a screenplay from a novel until it's unrecognizable ...

Anyway, I read the novel once a long time ago and it didn't come over as corny and sloganesque as the movie now does.
