Couldn't finish this film . . .

It's funny how the fact a film is highly regarded can keep you watching despite not enjoying the film. I couldn't help feeling like this was a "made for tv" type movie. Not sure why. Meh . . .

Me too. I was all set to really enjoy this film, being a big fan of many members of the cast including Diane Lane, Michael Stuhlberg, Louis CK, Helen Mirren and others. And I was very sympathetic to what I know of the story.

Not being a fan of Breaking Bad, though, I am not familiar with Bryan Cranston. I found his performance unwatchable. I am not ready to blame him, though, as it was so off putting I had to think it was more the direction.

In any event I could only get half way through the film. I can't understand the admiration for it. Did these people actuallyh watch it all the way through? I gave it a 3 mostly for Ms. Lane and some others. Otherwise I would have given it a 1.

reply

Agreed. Struggled through the movie because of Cranston. His portrayal of Trumbo may have been on the mark, but between Cranston being in the role, and the fact that his portrayal of him as a smug and condescending type, made it difficult for me to watch. Hollywood likes to make films that they think will "educate" us idiots from time to time and frankly, it's getting tiresome.

The subject matter is what engaged me throughout the film. Another disgusting part of our history. Espionage should be a crime. Thoughts should never be in a free society. Also was happy to see Diane Lane again.

reply

I feel ya on that. Very watered down.

reply

Glad I wasn't the only one, I turned it off and sent it back to Netflix. The whole lib agenda too, omg so contrived and try-hard. Oh well, so is hollywood. At any rate, yea it was terribad.

I watched all of it, I always do, but I complete agree with the "made for tv" criticism. Apart from Cranston as Trumbo, everything else ranged from mediocre to poor (expected, coming from Jay Roach). The Front, which basically tells the same story, is a much better film and on top of it, it's told by people who actually lived those events.
