1. Free movie promoted by steam, literally every f2p owning gamer on steam if not more was spammed a preload invite last week to load this "movie game" into their steam library for viewing.

2. There are millions of steam accounts, we're talking tens of millions so the numbers of views are going to be disproportionate compared to most documentaries and any votes are going to be disproportionately from just a tiny niche of gamers.

3. There are like 500k dota2 players each day at any time, so a few votes from those die hards will skew the rating severely

4. It was free, and promoted to a narrow audience. "normal" people didn't watch this, and they most certainly wouldn't have paid to watch it.

5. Many votes are by fanboys just happy their past time got attention at all in media.

6. The restricted demographics of the viewers mean there are many for a lack of a better term unsophisticated viewers, these people probably weren't judging it based on any rational comparison. A good documentary makes you care about something you had no interest in, like car racing in "senna", or donkey kong in "king of kong". This film on the other hand was nothing more than dota 2 marketing.

By any normal standard this film was mediocre. It cover no new ground, we've seen "documentaries" covering e games/ the rise of south korean starcraft and the rest before. This time its just dota 2 instead.

But yes, 84% giving it a perfect 10 means exactly one thing, its fanboys upvoting not based on quality, but fanboy zeal.

while i agree that there is woke skewing here due to narrow audience, i disagree with your 6th point. a persons age has little to do with his sophistication. i am 24 - way bellow the average age of steam user, and i have seen, according to IMDB voting history, over 3000 movies. including both of those you mention. I do not play DOTA. in fact, i do not play the whole genre of DOTA other than couple days trying out League of Legends (i got bored). however, this movie made me care about these people, and by your standards, thats a mark of a good movie.

So get off your high horse and realize people have different opinions, okay?

I'm an IMDB user since a long time, but rarely comment on the boards, though I vote almost every film I watch. What's the problem with that?
